Selling a boat in Étel
When the survey on your boat at Étel finds a problem, we organise the inspection and the solution, so the sale doesn’t stall. Before that, we check every buyer and run the viewings and sea trials. Afterwards, we organise the contract, the legal side and the transfer of ownership. You have nothing to do.
Every valuation starts with a thorough market study. We have access to sales data, and for each boat we weigh the age, the prices obtained for comparable boats, the options fitted, the condition, the service history and the area. The valuation is free, so you start from a figure grounded in real sales.
Condition, model, age and equipment set the value of a boat, and the area matters as well. Some boats sell better in America than in France, and the other way round, and a boat at Étel is judged on that basis, which is why the area is part of every valuation we give.
The market matters too. When the economy is strong, boats sell well, and when credit is easy to find, buyers can finance them; when it dries up, fewer can. So we combine the valuation with patience and extensive publicity on over 20 international platforms, on social media and on our own website, which draws many buyers. Usually, that finds the right buyer, and our commission is just 5%.

The hardest part of selling a boat is finding a serious buyer. Owners who sell privately usually meet about 20 time-wasters before they throw in the towel and call a broker. It can also be an unpleasant experience: like selling a second-hand car, you deal with buyers who can be extremely disagreeable.
Then comes the money. With so much scamming about today, you want a representative taking care of the payment, not you alone. The paperwork is complicated as well, especially if the boat changes flag or has to be re-registered. Insurance can be a problem, and someone has to check that the boat has no finance outstanding on it.
A broker will also get a better price than you will, because it is his job. For our 5% commission you are probably ahead anyway, and you do no work. Here at European Yacht Brokers, we speak six languages, list on over 20 international platforms including YachtWorld, and organise the contract, the legal side and the transfer of ownership for owners at Étel.
You give us a mandate to sell your boat. We don’t always ask for exclusivity; we decide case by case. The contract can be terminated at any time.* *If a buyer we introduced during the mandate buys the boat later, we are still entitled to our commission.
A careful photo shoot, with the boat clean, tidy and shot in favourable light, is the first filter a buyer applies. Photos of the exterior, interior, deck, engine room and technical details, supplemented where useful by a short video, present the boat fully and consistently with the asking price, cutting down on pointless viewings.
The specification sheet gathers verified data: builder, model, year, dimensions, engines, equipment and work carried out. On this basis the listing is published on the main boating portals and shared with the broker network and professional contacts, to reach qualified buyers at home and abroad.
Before publication it helps to gather the ownership documents, the registration papers, evidence of VAT status where relevant, engine manuals, maintenance invoices and the inventory of equipment. Well-ordered paperwork speeds up the buyer’s checks and makes the negotiation more solid.
Every enquiry is checked before anyone sets foot on your boat. We confirm who the buyer is, whether the buyer is serious and what the buyer wants, so the tyre-kickers never reach your berth at Étel. Because we advertise on over 20 international platforms and answer in six languages, enquiries come from buyers in many countries, and every one of them is qualified the same way.
We organise the viewings and the sea trial, so you do not need to show anyone round yourself. The sea trial is at the buyer’s expense, with a professional, insured captain, or you can be present yourself. That isn’t always advisable, because sellers are attached to their boats and buyers can use a sea trial to try to get the price down, but the decision is yours.
A good viewing starts with a clean boat, systems ready to demonstrate, the records to hand, access agreed and an honest account of its condition. We agree each viewing with you, so the boat is ready when the buyer arrives.
You give us a mandate to sell your boat. When we have a suitable offer, we put it to you. If you accept, we go ahead; if you don’t, we ask the buyer for a counter-offer, and the decision at each step is yours.
Once you accept an offer, we ask the buyer for a 10% deposit, paid into an escrow account. He can then arrange a survey and have the boat lifted out of the water at Étel, all at his own expense. If the survey is good, we go ahead with a sea trial, also at his expense, with a professional, insured captain, or with you on board if you prefer.
We then wait up to 15 working days for the survey report. If there is nothing structurally wrong with the boat, the sale goes ahead. If something is broken, it is fixed at the seller’s expense, and we organise the inspection and the solution. We also help you organise lifting the boat out of the water and give you a list of surveyors we are satisfied with, so the survey does not slow the sale down.
We take care of the contract, the legal side and the transfer of ownership for your sale at Étel, so you do nothing. The 10% deposit is paid into an escrow account, and the balance goes straight to the seller.
The paperwork can be complicated, especially if the boat changes flag or has to be re-registered, and insurance can be a problem. We also check that the boat has no finance outstanding on it.
With so much scamming about today, you need a representative managing the payment, not you alone. That is part of our work: we organise the contract, we deal with the legal side, and we see the transfer of ownership through, so the sale at Étel is finished properly. For our 5% commission you are very likely ahead anyway, and you do no work.

The Barre d’Étel, a moving sandbank, presents a significant obstacle with currents that complicate the river entrance. A semaphore provides guidance to vessels by VHF channel 13 or telephone. Its published seasonal opening extends from 3.5 hours before high water to 2.5 hours after high water between 15 June and 31 August.
The ria offers sheltered, tidal cruising among creeks, islands and ponds with departures from Étel. Navigating the entrance requires careful timing and semaphore guidance. The port supports both pleasure sailing and professional fishing excursions within these waters. This area provides a combination of varied tidal routes and sheltered waters for vessels based here.
Boats for sale Étel are published in the European Yacht Brokers archive as local brokers add and verify them. If you are considering selling, your boat can be presented to buyers searching in this area and in nearby ports: give the model, year and condition for a first valuation.
Étel is located in Morbihan, Brittany, at the mouth of the Ria d’Étel. The town was formerly a tuna-fishing centre and is now used as a pleasure-sailing marina.
Étel sits at the mouth of the Ria d’Étel, an area with a maritime heritage shaped by its former tuna-fishing activities. The town’s character is reflected in its tuna heritage and the boat cemetery located at Magouër, illustrating its historic connection to the fishing industry. The tidal landscape of the ria continues to influence the surrounding environment, now serving as a marina for pleasure sailing rather than commercial fishing.
Near Étel, visitors can explore the Musée des Thoniers and walk to viewpoints around the Barre d’Étel and Mât Fenoux. A summer ferryman crosses to Magouër, providing access to additional sights. A Navix cruise is available through the Ria, offering a different perspective on the area. The nearby beach and marked paths can be explored using bicycles loaned by the marina.
The port offers Wi-Fi, annex racks, ashore berths, a careening area, launching and handling, sorted-waste collection, energy, and bicycles. Nearby services include cafés, restaurants, supermarkets, and DIY and boating supplies. These facilities provide practical support for boat owners and visitors in the Étel area.
Étel holds an annual Tuna Festival every summer that commemorates the town’s tuna past. This event draws attention to the local heritage connected with tuna fishing, reflecting the historical importance of this activity to the area. The festival serves as a seasonal highlight, retaining a connection to the maritime traditions of Étel.
Étel is accessible via Aéroport de Lorient Bretagne Sud, which serves as the nearest airport. This facilitates movement from local access to regional and international travel. No additional transport details are provided for national or other regional connections.
