Plan access, paperwork, inspection arrangements and the transfer file for a boat based in the Algarve.
By Peter Mattey · 9 min read · Facts checked 2026-10-03
Selling a boat Algarve works best when the location, condition information and completion documents are clear before a buyer travels. DGRM's marina directory provides geographic context for places such as Lagos, Portimão, Albufeira and Vilamoura. The Portuguese sale and ownership-transfer rules provide the national framework. This guide connects that verified information with practical preparation without inventing local selling times, berth availability or a regional price premium.
Use it to organise a seller's file and identify who handles access, offers, documents and handover. Confirm current marina arrangements and quotes with the actual operator. If the craft has a foreign registration or the sale changes its flag, establish the correct authority route before using the Portuguese simple-transfer process. Give the buyer the actual marina and a clear meeting arrangement. DGRM's official directory identifies Algarve facilities and their geographic setting, but it is not a live booking system. As a practical recommendation, confirm access with the operator and provide a contact for the visit. State whether the craft will be viewed afloat or ashore and explain any change of location before travel. Avoid presenting an old directory description as proof that a particular berth or facility is available today.
For Lagos, the directory's description involves bridge access; Portimão is described in the River Arade setting, and Albufeira through its protected approach arrangement. Use these descriptions for orientation rather than navigation instructions. As a practical recommendation, have the person arranging a trial consult current local conditions and notices. Agree where the buyer meets the boat and who is responsible for movement. Do not copy historic bridge hours or approach details into a sale guide as though they had been rechecked operationally.
Vilamoura is also included in the directory. As a practical recommendation, use the verified facility name to help the buyer understand where the boat is based, then obtain current operator information for access and services. Ask separately about lifting, permitted work and any proposed berthing after the sale. A boat's attractive location should not become a claim that its berth passes automatically to the purchaser. Record what the operator actually agrees for the buyer rather than implying a right from the seller's existing arrangement.
Broker tip: Provide the actual facility name and meeting contact. Confirm current access and trial arrangements, and obtain the operator's own answer about any buyer berthing proposal. A related question is answered in our guide on how to prepare a boat for sale in Portugal.

Section 2
Identify the seller, buyer and boat accurately before conditions are negotiated. The Civil Code defines sale as transfer for a price and identifies delivery as an essential obligation. As a practical recommendation, assemble an equipment inventory and condition file, then compare them with the advertisement. Explain known concerns plainly and retain relevant maintenance evidence. A buyer who has travelled to the Algarve should be able to connect the craft viewed with the specification and documents being used for the agreement.
Inspection and trial arrangements should be recorded in the actual sale terms. As a practical recommendation, agree access, permission for movement, the scope of any examination and what happens after findings are received. Have uncertain acceptance or defect wording reviewed by a locally qualified lawyer. This guide does not supply a standard survey deadline or claim that a trial automatically settles all condition questions. Keep technical advice separate from the commercial decision to accept a boat at the agreed price and terms.
Delivery and payment need a shared sequence. As a practical recommendation, identify the documents to be handed over, the agreed location and the evidence needed before funds are released. If keys, manuals or equipment are held elsewhere, make the arrangements explicit. The Code's essential sale effects do not provide every operational detail. A completion plan should allow each party to understand what must happen next without guessing whether a signed document alone means the craft and its full inventory have been delivered.
Broker tip: Reconcile the inventory, condition information and documents before acceptance. Put inspection arrangements and the payment-and-handover sequence in terms both parties can follow. See also our guide on boat valuation in Portugal.

Section 3
DGRM identifies the future owner or their legal representative as applicant for its simple ownership-transfer service. As a practical recommendation, agree who prepares the file and who will monitor the request after completion. The seller can organise the current boat document and acquisition evidence in advance. Keep a copy of the materials supplied to the buyer. A local handover should leave the seller with a readable record of what was delivered and how the registration change will be followed through.
The service directs the applicant through BMar, the Electronic Maritime Desk, with request details and supporting attachments. It lists a copy of the boat document or equivalent still in the seller's name and evidence of acquisition. As a practical recommendation, check readability and consistency before submission. If a representative is used, confirm the appropriate declaration and powers for the role. Do not assume that a document prepared for marketing the boat automatically covers the buyer's administrative filing.
The recreational-registration regime requires changes to the record when ownership is transmitted. As a practical recommendation, check whether the boat falls within this route and whether other changes are requested at the same time. If the buyer plans to retain a foreign flag or change registration, obtain the relevant authorities' instructions separately. The boat being in the Algarve does not make DGRM's simple domestic ownership-transfer page a complete procedure for every international sale. No live Algarve berth availability, average selling time, regional price premium or market-demand statistics were verified. Current bridge operations, access, lifting prices and marina permissions need confirmation with the operator. For these, email us at info@europeanyachtbrokers.com for the latest information.
Broker tip: Prepare legible document copies and agree who files and tracks the request. Check the correct route separately where a foreign registry or flag change is involved. Readers often go on to our guide on how much yacht broker commission is in Portugal.

DGRM states that its simple-transfer service has no cost but notes possible local registration-alteration charges. As a practical recommendation, obtain the actual authority charge and keep it separate from professional and marina invoices. No Algarve-wide cost average or universal total is verified here. A seller should know which services were instructed and which party agreed to pay them, rather than discovering a combined charge only when the broker or representative prepares the completion account.
The Civil Code gives a default allocation for contract and ancillary expenses unless the parties agree otherwise. As a practical recommendation, state the sale's allocation expressly and retain quotes for preparation, lifting or other work. Confirm the current terms with the actual provider. A marina's published description does not establish today's tariff or permission for every activity. Identify any outstanding commitment under the seller's berth or storage arrangement before promising the buyer ongoing access or an included service.
If a broker acts under mandate, the Code addresses payment and expense reimbursement by the principal. As a practical recommendation, approve optional work before it is ordered and request a clear account for amounts received or paid. Keep the sale price, remuneration and local provider charges identifiable. The guide supplies no typical commission or seasonal discount. Use the agreed appointment and current operator quotes to establish the seller's actual position, then connect the account with the physical and documentary handover.
Broker tip: Obtain current quotes and record who pays. Ask the marina separately about access, work permissions and the buyer's berth proposal, then retain the final cost account. Our guide on what a yacht broker agreement in Portugal should say covers a related point.

Your questions
DGRM's official directory includes Lagos, Portimão, Albufeira and Vilamoura. Use the names and descriptions for geographic orientation. They do not verify live berth availability, current access hours or permission for a particular trial or lifting operation. As a practical recommendation, obtain the actual operator's arrangements and give the buyer a clear meeting contact before travel. [DGRM]
No automatic berth-transfer right was verified from the marina directory. It identifies facilities rather than determining the buyer's rights under the seller's berthing arrangement. As a practical recommendation, ask the actual operator whether the buyer can remain and on what terms, then describe only what is agreed. Keep that marina commitment distinct from ownership of the craft being sold. [DGRM]
DGRM identifies the future owner or their legal representative as applicant. Its service uses BMar and lists the current boat document in the seller's name and acquisition evidence. As a practical recommendation, agree preparation and follow-up with the buyer and retain copies at handover. A foreign registration or proposed flag change needs its own confirmed authority route. [DGRM]
It should explain the documents, equipment, location and payment sequence as a practical recommendation. Civil Code Article 879 identifies transfer, delivery and payment as essential sale effects but does not provide every operational detail. Match the agreement to the boat actually inspected, retain the inventory and resolve unclear condition or authority wording with the appropriate adviser before completion. [Procuradoria-Geral Distrital de Lisboa]
No current Algarve-wide total was verified. DGRM's simple-transfer page states no cost for that service while allowing for local authority registration charges. As a practical recommendation, obtain current provider quotes, separate professional and marina charges, and state who pays. Record the actual costs and authorised deductions so the final account can be compared with the sale and service agreements. [DGRM]
