IN BRIEF

Which yacht broker do you need at Port de Hérel?

In short: a seller’s broker works for the owner and brings the yacht to market; a buyer’s broker works for the purchaser and finds, compares and negotiates; a full-service broker handles the sale from the first conversation to completion and, if you agree it in writing, can act for both sides. At Port de Hérel you can choose any of the three, and the written agreement sets out exactly what is included.

This is our specialist field, and we make it easy: a valuation at no charge, a commission of just 5%, over 20 international platforms including YachtWorld, six languages and a local broker who can reach any French marina, including Port de Hérel, in under an hour. Tell us whether you want to sell, buy or have one broker for both, and we will take it from there.

Seller's listing broker with a limited service

At Port de Hérel, European Yacht Brokers acts as your seller’s broker: we value the yacht, prepare the listing, advertise it, deal with enquiries and arrange the viewings, for a commission of just 5%. How much more we take on is agreed with you in writing, so you know exactly where our work starts and ends before you sign.

Bringing a yacht to market is the listing broker’s job, and the owner makes the appointment. The broker may help set the asking price, collect specifications and photographs, prepare the listing, advertise the yacht, respond to enquiries and arrange viewings. Check that the listing agreement explains whether it is exclusive or open, how long it runs, what commission applies and which services are included.

Some owners choose a listing and marketing service and nothing more. The broker then advertises the yacht, hands any offer to the owner and takes no responsibility for negotiating or managing what follows. This can work as a clearly defined service, but it should not be taken as the standard seller’s broker. Published guidance usually includes work after the offer, with Horizon Yachts International describing the deposit, survey and sea-trial stages and YachtWorld explaining that a broker may arrange a survey and sea trial.

Before signing, be clear about where the broker’s work ends. Will the broker negotiate price and conditions, help prepare or explain the paperwork, track deadlines and contingencies, arrange access for a survey or sea trial, and coordinate closing, payment and transfer documents? If any of these are excluded, you may need separate professional help to complete them.

The broker who lists the yacht represents the seller under the listing relationship. A buyer approaching that broker should ask whom the broker acts for and whether to appoint a separate representative. A buyer may also be introduced by another broker through co-brokerage, with the firms sharing commission according to their agreement, so the seller should confirm how that affects the fee and service under their own contract. Read it as a seller’s listing broker with a deliberately limited scope rather than a general definition, whether the yacht is at Port de Hérel or elsewhere.

Yacht ownership handover with European Yacht Brokers

Buyer's broker representing the purchaser

Buying a yacht abroad is easier with someone on your side. At Port de Hérel, our buyer’s broker listens to what you want, finds suitable boats, helps you compare them and negotiate an offer, and keeps the survey, sea trial and closing moving. A local broker can reach any French marina in less than sixty minutes, and we speak six languages.

Buyers appoint a broker to act for them in finding and buying a yacht. Work begins with the buyer’s plans, preferred type, size, budget, location and priorities. The broker researches the market, identifies possible boats, asks the listing brokers for information, reviews the records that exist and helps the buyer compare options. A number of buyer brokers also preview yachts or arrange remote viewings, which helps the client narrow the field before travelling.

When the buyer has found a yacht, the broker can help prepare and negotiate the offer, explain the steps and deadlines and liaise with the seller’s listing broker. Expect a purchase agreement, deposit and escrow arrangements, an independent marine survey, specialist inspections, a sea trial and further discussion once the inspections are done. The broker helps coordinate these steps and keeps communication moving, but the surveyor assesses the yacht, and the broker does not replace an independent technical inspection.

Some yacht brokerages publish what their buyer services include: research, negotiation, survey coordination, sea-trial arrangements and assistance with closing documentation. At Curtis Stokes & Associates that means helping buyers research and preview yachts, prepare offers, negotiate and find surveyors and documentation support; HMY describes coordinating survey and sea-trial stages, post-survey discussions and closing. Since services vary, buyers should ask what the broker will handle and what remains theirs.

Payment is not the same everywhere. Either the buyer’s broker receives an agreed share of the commission through a cooperating listing broker, or the buyer owes a fee under a separate representation agreement. Put the fee, duration, scope of authority and any exclusivity in writing before the search begins. The purchaser then has a dedicated representative across a wider search, even where another brokerage holds the listing. Purchasers searching near Port de Hérel should ask these questions before appointing anyone.

Full-service broker representing both parties

European Yacht Brokers offers full service at Port de Hérel: valuation, advertising, viewings, offers and the steps to completion, handled by one team in six languages. Representing both sides is possible by written agreement, which sets out what is included and how the arrangement works.

Full service describes a broker who can look after the whole sale. After the first conversation with the owner the work may include assessing the yacht and asking price, photographs and particulars, advertising, enquiries, viewings and the communication of offers, then helping both parties move an accepted offer through the contract, deposit, survey, sea trial and closing. The broker may also coordinate documentation, escrow, delivery and other details. Set the precise service out in the listing and sale documents.

Dual agency, in the words of the Yacht Brokers Association of America, is one broker representing both parties in the same transaction, and it is what this profile describes: a broker dealing directly with the buyer while representing buyer and seller. It is not the same as a listing broker who helps a buyer but stays appointed by the seller. The buyer should ask for the relationship to be explained before making an offer.

A broker for both sides faces two sets of interests. Sellers generally want the strongest price and terms; buyers want a suitable yacht at a fair price and need to make informed decisions on its condition. Private negotiation for each side, as two independent representatives would do, is not possible for one broker. The YBAA discussion therefore stresses transparency about the arrangement and careful handling of confidential information, and the parties should rely on the written agreement and applicable local advice, since the legal rules and permitted arrangements vary by jurisdiction.

The commission is often dealt with in the seller’s listing agreement, but payment arrangements vary, so a buyer should check whether any separate fee is owed. Remember that full-service describes the range of work, while dual agency describes whom the broker represents. A broker can offer extensive transaction support without representing both sides.

How European Yacht Brokers operates in France and at Port de Hérel

Our French operations are coordinated from the Cannes head office, with brokers covering the coastal regions and many marinas across France. You speak first to the Cannes team, who put you in touch with the broker responsible for your area. Thanks to the regional network, a broker can reach any French marina in under an hour, arrange a visit to your boat and provide a complimentary valuation.

Coverage is by region. For Port de Hérel in Granville the broker is the one for Normandy; elsewhere our delegates and agents cover Brittany, Normandy, Hauts-de-France, Pays de la Loire, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, Occitanie, Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur and Corsica. They can speak to customers and visit their boats at short notice, with the Cannes head office keeping everything coordinated.

Start a valuation by downloading our Sales Mandate and Evaluation Sheet. From the boat’s details and condition we can study the market and produce a precise, evidence-based valuation, drawing on the sales data we hold for boats worldwide over the past three years. Remember that a valuation assesses likely market value; it does not guarantee the eventual sale price.

After appointment, your regional broker handles finding a buyer, or the right boat for you, and guides you through the transaction to completion and the successful transfer of funds. We advertise across over 20 platforms throughout Europe so boats are seen beyond the French market, and reaching international buyers can often help secure a stronger price than relying on local demand alone. Six languages are spoken between our brokers, so someone can talk to you in yours.

Frequently asked questions about yacht brokers

What does a yacht broker do for a seller at Port de Hérel?

The owner instructs a seller’s broker to bring the yacht to market and seek a buyer: helping set an asking price, preparing the listing, advertising it, answering enquiries and arranging viewings.

Can a buyer’s broker replace the marine survey?

No. The surveyor assesses the yacht and the broker does not replace an independent technical inspection, but the broker can help line up the survey and sea trial.

What is the difference between full-service and dual agency?

Full-service is about the range of work, while dual agency describes whom the broker represents. A broker can offer extensive transaction support without representing both sides.

How much does European Yacht Brokers charge?

Our commission is simply 5% and the valuation is free.

Can I end the mandate?

The contract can be terminated at any time. If a buyer we introduced during the mandate buys the boat later, we are still entitled to our commission.

Need a yacht broker Port de Hérel?

Owners or buyers interested in yachts around Port de Hérel are invited to contact the European Yacht Brokers Cannes team, who will connect them with the broker responsible for the area. Details to include are the model, year, location and condition for owners or the size, budget and type of yacht sought for buyers; for example: for an owner a 2015 sailing yacht of about 12 metres, and for a buyer a sailing yacht of about 40 feet with a budget of up to 150,000 euros.

We only charge 5% commission.
