What Does It Cost to Sell a Boat in Greece? 2027

Separate quoted sale services, specific certificate charges, cruising fees and port accounts.

By Peter Mattey · 9 min read · Facts checked 2026-10-03

Boat selling costs Greece budgets should identify the actual procedure and agreed services rather than apply a single percentage to every sale. This guide separates a documented Small Craft Register certificate charge from privately negotiated services, cruising fees and continuing port costs. The official amounts keep their stated scope, and practical budgeting checks are labelled as recommendations. No universal seller tax, standard broker commission or complete nationwide transfer-cost table is invented to make the estimate look finished.

Use it to request itemised answers before accepting an offer and to agree who will arrange each payment. A fee attached to a particular certificate is not every boat's total sale cost. Confirm current requirements with the relevant authority or a qualified adviser, and retain the actual quotations and payment evidence. Build a sale budget from written service terms

Our recommendation is to separate authority charges from privately agreed sale services before estimating what the seller will retain. Ask any broker for written terms identifying the fee basis, when it becomes payable, included work and any separate expenses. Obtain specific quotations for photography, inspection access, lifting, document preparation and advice where those services are proposed. These are practical budgeting categories, not a claim that every sale requires every service or that all providers charge in the same way throughout Greece.

Our recommendation is to record who will pay each proposed cost and whether payment depends on a completed sale, an instruction being signed or work being undertaken. Ask how cancellation, an unsuccessful inspection or a change of broker affects any agreed charge. No official standard yacht-broker commission, universal marketing fee or mandatory seller-funded survey was verified for this guide. Do not turn a provider's particular proposal into a nationwide rule or assume that calling a service optional means there are no contractual consequences once it has been ordered.

Our recommendation is to compare the same scope and payment conditions when reviewing proposals. Keep a contingency for quotations that remain outstanding, with a clear note that the amount is not yet confirmed rather than inventing a typical allowance. Ask a qualified adviser about the actual transaction's tax treatment and any applicable filing costs. The opened sources do not establish a universal seller tax rate or complete transfer-cost table for every boat, flag and seller status, so no unsupported percentage is included in the budget.

Broker tip: Our recommendation is to obtain written terms for each proposed service and record who pays, the trigger and included work. Keep unresolved tax and filing amounts explicit rather than use an invented standard allowance. See also our guide on how much yacht broker commission is in Greece.

Section 2

Confirm the charge for the actual administrative route

Mitos publishes a separate Small Craft Register ownership-certificate procedure and describes certificate issue on registration and on a recorded ownership transfer exceeding fifty per cent. Our recommendation is to ask the receiving authority whether that exact route applies before budgeting its fee. The published charge should not be presented as the total cost of every Greek yacht sale. Boats on another register or with a different flag may require a different process, and privately agreed services remain separate from this specified administrative certificate.

For that ownership certificate, the current Mitos entry gives a total charge of thirty-five euros, made up of a twenty-euro electronic fee and fifteen euros for the stated fund payment. Our recommendation is to confirm the correct payment method and who will arrange it for the actual application. This is a documented certificate charge with an explicit procedural scope. It does not establish which party must bear all sale expenses or imply that any possible transaction tax, registry work or professional advice is included.

Our recommendation is to ask for an itemised list of the applicable authority payments and documentary requirements before completion. Identify the specific procedure beside every amount and retain the corresponding payment evidence. If a quotation includes an administrative charge, ask whether the provider's own service is charged separately. This guide does not extrapolate the Small Craft Register certificate fee to a larger yacht, use a published processing limit as a typical delay or invent a universal seller-and-buyer allocation. Confirm current requirements with the relevant authority or a qualified adviser.

Broker tip: Our recommendation is to match each payment to the applicable procedure and obtain the authority's itemised answer. Treat the stated certificate charge separately from tax questions and privately agreed professional services. Readers often go on to our guide on boat valuation in Greece.

Section 3

Keep the cruising fee visible up to the handover

AADE's January 2026 FAQ states that qualifying private sailing or motorised pleasure boats over seven metres overall in Greek territorial waters are within TEPAI scope regardless of flag. Our recommendation is to identify the relevant payment period when planning a sale and ask for the actual evidence. Keep this cruising-fee question separate from brokerage or registry charges. It is not payment for advertising a boat or allocating a berth, and a marina invoice should not automatically be treated as evidence that it has been settled.

The same FAQ publishes monthly TEPAI amounts by overall length: sixteen euros above seven and up to eight metres; twenty-five above eight and up to ten; thirty-three above ten and up to twelve; and eight euros per metre from the first metre for boats above twelve. Our recommendation is to verify the length recorded on the relevant boat documents and the applicable payment period before budgeting. These are the official cruising-fee bands, not marina tariffs, and should not be used to infer what a port or private marina will charge for berthing.

For an entering liable boat, AADE requires TEPAI payment before or at entry and then before each subsequent month of stay starts. Its FAQ also says the fee is not imposed on boats outside Greek territorial waters, which includes its stated explanation of boats on land. Our recommendation is to tell the authority precisely where the boat will be kept and confirm any applicable exception or formal status. Do not assume that calling a boat winterised creates an exemption, or that a storage agreement itself settles the tax position. No standard brokerage percentage, universal marketing fee or mandatory seller-funded inspection verified. No current universal transfer-tax table, seller tax rate or all-expense allocation verified; obtain case-specific advice. For these, email us at info@europeanyachtbrokers.com for the latest information.

Broker tip: Our recommendation is to put berth or storage charges and TEPAI in separate lines. Confirm the boat's length, actual location and payment period rather than assuming one receipt settles both obligations. Our guide on whether you pay VAT on a boat in Greece covers a related point.

Section 4

Confirm continuing berth, storage and departure expenses

Our recommendation is to ask the actual port or marina for a written account of charges continuing before handover and the proposed departure arrangements. The Municipal Port Fund of Kos provides an official calculator but expressly says its amounts are indicative and each port body may apply its own tariff. That warning prevents the example from becoming a nationwide selling-cost estimate. Identify the boat, dates and authorised arrangement in the quotation, and ask separately about any services ordered for viewing, inspection or delivery.

The Kos calculator's published tariff table states effectiveness from the eighth of July 2021 and gives private pleasure-vessel annual rates per metre in length bands. For lengths from 7.01 to ten metres it gives one hundred and fifty euros per metre per year; from 10.01 to fifteen metres, one hundred and seventy; from 15.01 metres upwards, two hundred. Our recommendation is to obtain a written confirmation for the intended port and dates before using those published base figures in a purchase budget or assuming they include every service.

The same calculator converts the annual boat charge into a daily charge by dividing by three hundred and sixty-five and rounding to two decimal places. It also distinguishes stern berthing from alongside berthing with a twenty-five per cent addition. Our recommendation is to ask the managing body which arrangement is authorised for the particular vessel. Do not confuse an indicative cost calculation with allocation of a physical place. This guide does not establish an availability shortage, waiting-list length or standard seasonal premium from that tariff page.

Broker tip: Our recommendation is to use the official table as a question list for the intended port. Obtain a written quote and berth confirmation before treating an indicative calculation as your payable bill. A related question is answered in our guide on how to prepare a boat for sale in Greece. Non-resident sellers should also read our guide on whether a non-resident can sell a boat in Greece.

Your questions

Frequently asked questions

Is there a fixed official brokerage percentage for every Greek yacht sale?

No such percentage was verified in the official sources reviewed. Our recommendation is to obtain the actual broker's written fee basis, payment trigger, included work and separate expenses before instruction. Keep those contractual costs distinct from the specific administrative certificate charge and the cruising or port charges supported by official guidance. (Mitos; AADE; Municipal Port Fund of Kos)

What is the stated Small Craft Register certificate charge?

The current Mitos procedure lists thirty-five euros total: a twenty-euro electronic fee and fifteen euros for the stated fund payment. That amount belongs to the specified ownership-certificate procedure, not every yacht sale. Our recommendation is to confirm whether the route applies and obtain an itemised answer for any other payments before budgeting completion. (Mitos)

Does the certificate fee decide who pays all sale expenses?

The reviewed certificate procedure does not establish a universal seller-and-buyer allocation of all sale expenses. Our recommendation is to record who will arrange and pay each applicable authority payment and each privately agreed service in the actual sale plan. Treat the specified administrative charge separately from unverified transaction taxes and professional fees. (Mitos)

Should the seller check cruising-fee payments before handover?

Our recommendation is to establish the relevant period and retain the evidence where TEPAI applies. AADE's FAQ sets the scope and payment timing for qualifying vessels in Greek territorial waters. It is a separate cruising charge, so do not assume brokerage payments or a berth invoice settle it, and ask the authority about the actual handover situation. (AADE)

Can I use the Kos calculator as my complete selling-cost estimate?

No. The calculator concerns berthing, expressly gives indicative amounts and warns that individual port bodies may apply their own tariffs. Our recommendation is to obtain the actual port's written proposal and account, then add the separately agreed services and applicable administrative payments. No source here makes the calculator a full sale-cost or transaction-tax calculation. (Municipal Port Fund of Kos; Mitos)
