THE EYB COUNTRY GUIDES · Greece
Review the actual funds arrangement and its relationship to the ownership-transfer evidence.
By Peter Mattey · 9 min read · Facts checked 2026-10-03
Yacht sale escrow Greece proposals need to be assessed by their actual written terms and provider, not the label alone. This guide gives clearly labelled recommendations about account control, release evidence and payment checks, supported by official entity-verification, registry and complaint-service information. It does not invent a compulsory escrow model or promise universal segregation, insolvency protection or deposit insurance. The purchase agreement, funds arrangement and applicable ownership-register step should remain separate and clearly coordinated.
Use it before transferring a deposit or balance to a proposed holder. Ask for the provider's evidence and obtain qualified advice on the actual protection and release terms. Confirm current requirements with the relevant authority or a qualified adviser, especially for cross-border accounts, unclear instructions or a dispute about returning money. Our recommendation is to ask the proposed funds holder for the actual written arrangement before transferring a yacht deposit or balance. Identify who will receive the money, which account will be used and what evidence the parties will receive. Ask what the provider means when it uses the word escrow and have the terms reviewed by a qualified adviser. This guide does not establish a standard Greek yacht-sale escrow structure or assume that every intermediary's account provides identical protection simply because a familiar label is used.
Our recommendation is to ask whether the proposed arrangement separates the money from the provider's own funds, who can authorise release and what happens if the parties disagree. Request the actual treatment of charges, interest if any, cancellation and return of money rather than assume those matters are covered. These are practical due-diligence questions, not verified legal guarantees. The opened official sources do not establish universal segregation, insolvency protection or deposit insurance for every yacht-related funds holder, so no such promise is made here.
Our recommendation is to obtain advice on the provider, agreement and account before payment, especially where several countries or entities are involved. Keep the purchase price and the holder's service fee separately identified. Do not infer a mandatory escrow requirement, standard deposit percentage or automatic refund right from ordinary sale practice. If the proposed arrangement leaves control, release or dispute handling unclear, resolve those questions before transferring funds rather than rely on the provider's trading name or an assurance that the arrangement is customary.
Broker tip: Our recommendation is to request the actual account, control, release and return terms and obtain qualified review before payment. Do not assume the escrow label creates segregation, insurance or insolvency protection. Readers often go on to our guide on what goes in a boat sale contract in Greece.

Gov.gr describes the General Commercial Registry public search as covering active and deleted commercial businesses that are subject to registration. It can be searched using a tax number, registry number, legal name or trading name. Our recommendation is to request the proposed contracting entity's identifiers and compare them with the official information before signing or making a payment. A familiar trading name should not replace identification of the actual business, and a directory entry should not be presented as proof of every licence or permission.
The official service lists information including the business's current status, activities and management, alongside its identifiers and contact details. Our recommendation is to match the entity named in the proposal, invoice and payment instructions and ask about any inconsistency. A public record is useful for identity checks, but it does not establish the quality of an individual's advice, the suitability of a proposed contract or authority over a particular yacht. Keep those questions separate rather than treat one successful search as a complete professional assessment.
Our recommendation is to ask who is acting for whom and which tasks the instruction actually covers. Identify the named contact, contracting entity, person handling documents and any person expected to receive funds. Request written clarification if separate businesses are involved. These are practical checks, not a claim that every arrangement uses the same structure. Do not assume that a business providing marketing also owns the yacht, can sign the seller's agreement or has agreed to hold money under a protected escrow arrangement.
Broker tip: Our recommendation is to match the actual entity and identifiers across the proposal, invoice and payment instructions. Keep business identity, service quality and authority over the yacht as separate checks. Our guide on how to transfer boat ownership in Greece covers a related point.

Section 3
Mitos says ownership does not transfer without ship-register entry under its stated Greek transfer procedure. Our recommendation is to have the release conditions reviewed alongside the applicable title route and sale agreement. Identify the evidence the holder would need before releasing money and how it will be obtained. A private funds arrangement does not itself prove that the public register has been updated. Equally, the stated registry procedure does not establish a universal escrow mechanism or decide what every funds holder is authorised to do.
Our recommendation is to distinguish payment of a deposit, acceptance after inspection, release of the balance and physical handover in the written plan. Ask how missing documents, adverse findings or an authority query would be handled and who can give instructions. Do not assume that an accepted offer, a signed instrument and register completion are interchangeable events. Where the vessel follows a different flag or register, obtain that authority's requirements rather than apply the Mitos procedure automatically because the yacht happens to be in Greece.
Our recommendation is to verify payment instructions through a trusted contact method and ask how any later account change will be authenticated. Retain the agreed arrangement, transfer confirmation and relevant release evidence with the completion file. These are practical payment-safety checks, not a verified guarantee against fraud or a legal rule about all account holders. No opened official source provides a standard yacht-sale release clause or automatic recovery mechanism. Use the actual provider's evidence and qualified advice to assess the proposed arrangement before trusting it with funds. No compulsory yacht-sale escrow structure, standard deposit, universal release clause or automatic refund right verified. No universal account segregation, insolvency protection, deposit-insurance coverage or fraud guarantee verified. For these, email us at info@europeanyachtbrokers.com for the latest information.
Broker tip: Our recommendation is to have release conditions reviewed against the actual sale and register route. Identify the required evidence, instruction authority and dispute process, and independently confirm payment details before transfer. Gov.gr describes a consumer-complaint service for matters within the General Secretariat of Trade and Consumer Protection's competence, including services. Our recommendation is to retain the instruction, fee proposal, invoices and relevant communications if a disagreement arises. Ask the authority or a qualified adviser whether the actual matter falls within the route before relying on it. A published complaint service is not a promise of a refund, a court decision or automatic protection for every business-to-business or cross-border yacht-related transaction.
The government page allows signed complaints with authentication, signed complaints without authentication and anonymous complaints. It says signed complaints are examined on a priority basis. Our recommendation is to prepare a clear account of the issue and the supporting documents and confirm the appropriate submission method. This describes the service's stated options, not a guaranteed resolution period. Do not treat an acknowledgement as proof that money will be recovered or assume a complaint itself changes the contract's payment obligations or the yacht's recorded ownership.
Our recommendation is to seek qualified advice promptly where a dispute concerns authority, funds or disputed completion conditions. Keep the amount, agreed service, payment trigger and correspondence clear, and ask which remedy or procedure is relevant to the particular parties. No opened official source for this guide establishes a standard yacht-broker refund rule or a guaranteed recovery route. Practical record keeping can make a query easier to explain, but it should not be described as creating rights that have not been verified under the applicable agreement and law.
Broker tip: Our recommendation is to retain the proposal, instruction, invoices and communications and ask whether the actual dispute falls within the official complaint route. Do not assume submission guarantees recovery or a resolution date. See also our guide on whether you pay VAT on a boat in Greece.

Your questions
No universal yacht-sale escrow requirement was verified in the official sources opened for this guide. Our recommendation is to have the actual funds arrangement reviewed, including the provider, account, release conditions and return terms. Keep it distinct from Mitos' stated ownership-register requirement and do not assume ordinary sale practice supplies a compulsory structure. (Mitos; Gov.gr — Ministry of Development)
No universal segregation, insolvency protection or deposit-insurance guarantee was established here. Our recommendation is to request the actual written account and control arrangements and obtain qualified advice before payment. Official business information can help identify the entity, but it does not itself establish the protection provided by a particular funds account. (Gov.gr — Ministry of Development)
Gov.gr describes a GEMI public search by tax number, registry number, legal name or trading name and lists status, activities and management information. Our recommendation is to match the provider and invoice with the actual written payment instructions and independently confirm any account change. The entity record does not itself certify a protected escrow arrangement. (Gov.gr — Ministry of Development)
Our recommendation is to have the actual release terms reviewed alongside the applicable title route. Mitos says ownership does not transfer without ship-register entry for its stated procedure. Identify how the required evidence will be obtained and who can authorise release, rather than assume a signed instrument or a funds transfer alone completes ownership. (Mitos)
No recovery guarantee is established by the government complaint page. It provides a consumer service-complaint route within the stated authority's competence and describes submission options. Our recommendation is to retain the agreement, instructions and payment evidence and ask whether the actual case is covered, while obtaining qualified advice about the appropriate remedy. (Gov.gr — Ministry of Development)
