THE EYB COUNTRY GUIDES · Greece
Organise direct marketing while keeping contract, payment and official procedure responsibilities clear.
By Peter Mattey · 9 min read · Facts checked 2026-10-03
This sell a boat privately Greece guide explains how to organise direct marketing while keeping the agreement and official transfer questions visible. Current Mitos procedures and AADE's Transit Log guidance support specific administrative checks; marketing, inspection and payment planning are clearly labelled recommendations. No guaranteed saving, faster sale or private-sale tax exemption is invented. Handling enquiries yourself does not establish the boat's condition, authority to sign or completion of the applicable registry and customs-record procedures.
Use it to decide who will arrange each task before accepting an offer. Establish the actual boat, flag and register, prepare a clear inventory and ask for qualified help with unresolved terms. Confirm current requirements with the relevant authority or a qualified adviser, and retain the evidence of each applicable completed step. For anything this guide does not cover, email us at info@europeanyachtbrokers.com for the latest information.

Our recommendation is to describe the actual boat accurately and decide what evidence you will provide before publishing a private advert. Prepare present-condition photographs, the equipment list and a clear note of known issues or untested systems. Do not use another boat's performance claim or imply that a photograph is an independent technical inspection. This is practical marketing advice, not a verified advertising template. No uplift in selling price, typical enquiry rate or faster completion from selling privately is claimed in this guide.
Our recommendation is to establish a reasoned asking strategy using identified condition and comparison evidence rather than copy a price without checking its basis. Keep an asking figure distinct from an achieved transaction and explain unresolved assumptions. Decide who will answer enquiries, organise access and keep records of offers and communications. A private seller still needs a clear plan for the tasks involved; avoiding a service proposal does not by itself prove a lower total cost or remove the need to address the applicable ownership procedure.
Our recommendation is to agree viewing attendance, safe demonstrations and any independent inspection before a buyer travels. Keep document originals secure while providing suitable copies for early discussion, and distinguish the boat's recorded owner from anyone assisting informally. Record what is included in the sale and what will be removed. These recommendations help the parties understand the proposed transaction, but they should not be presented as a universal private-sale exemption, a complete legal compliance checklist or a substitute for qualified advice about the actual agreement.
Broker tip: Our recommendation is to prepare accurate images, an equipment list and a condition note before advertising. Decide who handles enquiries and records, then arrange suitable inspection access without relying on unsupported selling-speed claims. Our recommendation is to have a qualified lawyer review the actual proposed agreement rather than rely on a template without checking the boat's flag, register and parties. Describe the yacht by consistent identifiers and attach the agreed equipment list. State which documents have been provided and which remain outstanding. These are practical drafting recommendations, not a verified compulsory clause list. The guide does not supply a standard contract, decide which law governs every cross-border sale or promise that a familiar form will fit the particular transaction.
Our recommendation is to agree the inspection scope and the consequences of adverse findings before signing or ordering services. Identify who arranges a survey or trial, who operates the vessel and how the parties will communicate decisions. If an offer depends on specified checks, ask the lawyer to make the condition and decision process clear. Do not infer a universal right to cancel, a mandatory deposit size or a standard inspection deadline from ordinary brokerage practice. Those matters need attention in the actual agreement and applicable law.
Our recommendation is to specify the payment recipient, payment stages and evidence required before release of the balance. Confirm account details through a trusted contact method and ask the adviser how payment should coordinate with the applicable register entry and document handover. This is practical protection advice, not a statement that every deposit is legally protected or every intermediary provides escrow. Have the agreement explain what happens if required documentation is missing or completion cannot proceed, instead of relying on informal assurances about returning money later.
Broker tip: Our recommendation is to obtain qualified review of the actual inspection conditions, payment stages and non-completion terms. Verify the recipient independently and avoid assuming a template supplies universal cancellation or deposit protection. The current Mitos ship-transfer procedure states that ownership does not transfer without ship-register entry. Our recommendation is to agree who will prepare and submit the applicable documents and how the parties will know the entry has been made. Keep that step distinct from signing, paying and taking physical possession. A written completion plan should reflect the actual procedural route rather than assume that all registers treat delivery the same way. Ask the receiving authority to confirm the requirements for the specific vessel and parties.
Mitos describes the stated application as submitted in person or by post rather than provided digitally. Its sequence includes checking documents, recording the transfer and issuing a new nationality document. Our recommendation is to obtain the authority's current submission instructions and retain the acknowledgement and resulting evidence. Do not treat a general website account or an electronic signature service as proof that this entire registry procedure has become an online transfer. The method for authenticating a signature and the method for submitting the actual application are separate questions.
The separate Small Craft Register certificate procedure described by Mitos applies on registration and on a recorded ownership transfer exceeding fifty per cent. Our recommendation is to ask which route fits the actual craft and have payment and handover coordinated with that route. A published administrative estimate should not be treated as a guaranteed selling timetable. The guide does not claim that receiving money completes every filing or that private parties can ignore applicable requirements because no broker is involved in the agreement. No universal broker requirement or private-sale legal exemption asserted; this guide provides task-planning recommendations. No guaranteed saving, selling speed, tax exemption, deposit protection or universal cancellation right verified. For these, email us at info@europeanyachtbrokers.com for the latest information.
Broker tip: Our recommendation is to obtain the receiving authority's current submission instructions and retain the acknowledgement and new evidence. Coordinate payment and handover with the required entry rather than assuming a guaranteed completion time. See also our guide on what goes in a boat sale contract in Greece.

AADE's current digital Transit Log manual describes modification requests for a finalised log, including owner, master, vessel name or flag details. Our recommendation is to ask customs whether and how the actual ownership change must be recorded before relying on an existing log. A screen allowing a modification request is not itself permission to transfer every customs status to another person. Keep the ownership-register procedure and the customs record distinct, with the receiving authority's answer identifying what applies to the boat's present and intended use.
The same manual lists representation authority and an owner's power of attorney among supporting document categories, as applicable. Our recommendation is to identify the person acting in each procedure and confirm the evidence the receiving authority requires. Someone helping with advertising, inspection or payment should not automatically be treated as authorised for every filing. Match the relevant names and vessel identifiers across the ownership instrument, register evidence and customs submissions, and ask about any inconsistency instead of assuming an informal explanation will be accepted later.
Our recommendation is to confirm insurance, permitted use, the buyer's berth arrangement and departure plans separately before taking the yacht into service. Ask the relevant authority or provider for a written answer where the existing arrangement names the seller or a different user. The sources here do not establish automatic berth transfer or automatic continuation of every customs permission after a sale. Retain the actual evidence in a handover file, with unresolved questions stated openly rather than describe the boat as fully transferred on the strength of one document.
Broker tip: Our recommendation is to ask customs about the actual owner or user change and confirm representation evidence. Check berth, insurance and departure arrangements separately, without assuming one register document settles every continuing arrangement. Your questions
No such conclusion is established by the official sources. Our recommendation is to obtain qualified review of the actual agreement, inspection conditions and payment sequence even if you organise the marketing yourself. Mitos describes specific ownership-transfer requirements; the parties should identify the applicable route rather than assume the absence of a broker removes administrative steps. (Mitos)
No verified price uplift or selling timetable is claimed in this guide. Our recommendation is to use accurate present-condition images, a clear equipment list and supported condition information, and explain unresolved assumptions behind the asking strategy. Keep marketing statements distinct from the applicable ownership evidence and do not promise a result simply because you are handling enquiries directly. (Mitos)
Mitos says ownership does not transfer without ship-register entry under its stated procedure. Our recommendation is to agree who prepares and submits the documents, how the parties obtain the resulting evidence and how payment and handover coordinate. Confirm the actual flag and register before treating this procedure as applicable to the yacht. (Mitos)
The reviewed source does not establish that general authority. AADE's Transit Log manual lists representation authority and an owner's power of attorney among applicable supporting document categories. Our recommendation is to identify who acts in each procedure and confirm the receiving authority's requirements rather than assume someone helping with enquiries or payment can make every filing. (AADE)
AADE's manual describes modification requests, including owner details, for a finalised log. That is separate from the applicable ownership-register route described by Mitos. Our recommendation is to obtain each authority's answer for the actual change and retain separate completion evidence. Do not present a requested customs-record change as proof that every ownership and continuing arrangement has transferred. (AADE; Mitos)
