How to Buy a Boat in Brittany, France in 2027: Checks and Costs

Check actual harbour access, the dated 2026 reception notices and the documents needed to complete a French yacht purchase.

By Peter Mattey · 9 min read · Facts checked 2026-10-03

Buying a boat Brittany should combine a proper yacht inspection with the practical arrangements at its actual port. A viewing berth, a trial departure and a place to keep the boat after purchase are separate matters. Official Saint-Malo and Lorient information provides useful local detail, including current dated reception restrictions, while the French ownership and registration rules still need their own file. This guide connects those verified facts with practical recommendations for organising the purchase.

The port details concern the named sites and are not a regional market forecast or complete pilotage guide. Confirm current access, operator acceptance and actual charges for the yacht and dates. Obtain qualified advice on ownership and the contract, and commission the boat's condition assessment separately before deciding to complete. Section 1

Identify the actual port and plan access for the yacht

Brittany offers different port arrangements, and the buyer should establish the actual viewing berth before planning the visit. Bretagne Plaisance's official Saint-Malo page distinguishes Port des Sablons from the Vauban basin. It describes Sablons visitor reception for boats under 14 metres and gives harbour-office contact instructions. As practical advice, tell the operator the yacht's real length, beam and draft and ask what applies to the proposed appointment. The published visitor description is not a promise of acceptance for a larger boat or an individual place on the viewing date.

The Sablons page identifies an entrance threshold at 2 metres above chart datum and says a tide scale and illuminated display show available water. As practical advice, ask the skipper and harbour office to confirm access for the yacht's draft and current conditions before arranging a trial movement. This information explains why the boat and appointment need to be matched to the port. It is not a complete pilotage instruction and should not replace current charts, notices, operator advice or the skipper's responsibility for the actual passage.

For Vauban, the operator describes access through the Naye lock and asks boats to contact the harbour office for agreement and positioning before arrival. It separately identifies the lock's own contact route and current schedule information. As practical advice, organise the survey and trial appointment around the confirmed movements rather than assuming an unrestricted departure from every viewing berth. Have the seller identify who can skipper the boat and arrange any permissions, and obtain the actual berth proposal separately if you intend to keep the yacht after completion.

Broker tip: Practical recommendation: give the operator the yacht's dimensions, draft and proposed trial date. Have the skipper confirm current access and lock arrangements, and keep the viewing appointment separate from any request for a future berth contract. Section 2

Check the identity, ownership and registration first

Before comparing yachts, decide how and where you intend to use the boat and then inspect its administrative file. The Maritime Ministry says French recreational boats navigating at sea must be registered with the relevant DDTM/DML service, with its guidance identifying compulsory registration for recreational boats from 2.5 metres and personal watercraft. As practical advice, ask the seller for the existing certificate and compare the yacht's identifying details with the actual vessel before arranging a purchase-dependent trip or making the document file an assumption.

The registration certificate (certificat d'enregistrement) is required aboard. The Ministry explains that registration and the former francisation procedure merged, and that the older circulation card and francisation document remain valid. As a practical recommendation, ask the maritime service to confirm the relevance of an older document rather than dismissing it because the title is different. Equally, possession of a certificate should prompt a review of the boat and owner details, not a decision to skip the separate checks on the proposed sale and the vessel's condition.

The Ministry recommends investigating the yacht's mortgage position with the competent commercial court before buying. As practical advice, have a locally qualified adviser identify the relevant records and compare the proposed seller's authority with the ownership documents. Agree the survey and trial scope separately so that documentary and physical questions receive their own answers. This guide does not infer clear title from a yacht's location in a marina, or treat a broker's description as evidence that no security interest or other legal issue affects the sale.

Broker tip: Practical recommendation: request the complete identity and ownership file before committing. Ask a locally qualified adviser to check the mortgage position and seller's authority, and agree a separate survey and trial scope for the physical yacht. Section 3

Check the current reception restrictions and proposed home berth

The Saint-Malo operator's current notice says Vauban visitor reception is suspended from 30 September to 5 November 2026, and Sablons visitor places are not guaranteed from 1 October to 1 November 2026 for the Route du Rhum. Those dates matter at this guide's checking date. As practical advice, obtain direct confirmation before arranging a purchase-dependent arrival or trial berth during the restriction. The notice is a dated local event arrangement, not evidence of permanent regional scarcity or a predicted waiting time at another marina.

The Region Brittany's official Lorient page identifies the recreational operator and describes different spaces at the waterfront basin, Kernével and La Base. It lists harbour offices, supplies and waste services for recreational users. As practical advice, name the intended site and the yacht's requirements when asking for an offer, then request the actual tariff, facilities and acceptance conditions. A port page covering several activities may also list commercial or land-occupation documents, so have the recreational operator identify the price that actually concerns keeping the private yacht afloat.

The same Lorient page identifies La Base as reserved for recreational professionals and the offshore-racing centre. As practical advice, check which site is offered for the yacht's intended private use rather than assuming every published facility is an unrestricted visitor berth. Ask about lifting or specialist access separately, with an itemised quotation if a survey requires work ashore. No average Brittany berth price, annual vacancy count or market premium is verified here; the useful budget comes from the operator's offer for the actual boat and dates. No regional boat-inventory mix, market premium, discount, average berth price or general waiting time was verified. Saint-Malo access detail is not complete pilotage advice; current charts, notices, operator confirmation and skipper assessment remain necessary. For these, email us at info@europeanyachtbrokers.com for the latest information.

Broker tip: Practical recommendation: confirm event-period access directly before booking a delivery berth. Ask the intended recreational operator for a site-specific offer, actual tariff and lifting arrangements, and avoid inferring private-berth eligibility from a general port document. Section 4

Agree the sale and complete the ownership declaration

For an eligible private sale using the online portal, the seller starts the declaration, uploads the sale document and receives a transfer code to give the buyer. The buyer then uses that code to complete the acquisition declaration. As practical advice, agree in advance who will perform each step and retain the completion record. Treat the portal procedure as part of the handover plan rather than leaving it until after the buyer has departed with the yacht and the parties have stopped checking the transaction documents together.

Co-ownership needs particular attention. The Ministry states that all co-owners must confirm agreement online for the transfer to be finalised. Its document list includes an invoice or sale deed signed by all parties, identifying the yacht and the parties, plus the existing certificate, identity and domicile evidence. As a practical recommendation, establish who must sign and confirm before setting a completion appointment. Do not treat the person attending the viewing as automatically authorised to dispose of every owner's interest, and ask the adviser to review the actual ownership arrangement.

The procedure can also be handled with a recreational boating service at the counter, by post or by email. The Ministry's file requirements distinguish the buyer's identity and domicile evidence, including an elected-domicile attestation for the stated European residents spending less than 6 months in France. As practical advice, ask the receiving service to confirm the appropriate route for your residence and ownership structure before assuming that a seller's previous online experience applies. Keep the signed documents and the administrative confirmation with the sale record.

Broker tip: Practical recommendation: arrange the signatures, co-owner confirmations and transfer-code exchange before handover. Have the receiving service confirm the route for the buyer's residence, and keep evidence that the ownership declaration was completed. Your questions

Frequently asked questions

What should I confirm for a Saint-Malo trial appointment?

Confirm the actual berth, boat dimensions and draft with the harbour office, then have the skipper review current access and any lock arrangements. The official operator distinguishes Sablons and Vauban and describes different access conditions. As practical advice, set the survey appointment around confirmed movements, using current charts and operator information rather than treating a general visitor page as a complete passage instruction. (Bretagne Plaisance, official Saint-Malo visitor arrangements)

Is Vauban visitor reception open throughout autumn 2026?

No, the operator's dated notice suspends Vauban visitor reception during the stated Route du Rhum period and gives a separate restriction for Sablons visitor places. As practical advice, contact the operator before making a purchase delivery depend on a berth during that event window. Treat the dates as a local temporary arrangement, and obtain fresh confirmation for an arrival outside the published period. (Bretagne Plaisance, official Saint-Malo visitor arrangements)

Are all Lorient recreational sites available for ordinary private visitors?

The official regional page distinguishes the recreational sites and identifies La Base as reserved for professionals and the offshore-racing centre. It does not establish unrestricted visitor acceptance everywhere. As practical advice, name the proposed site and private use when asking the operator for an offer, and obtain the actual tariff, dimensions and conditions before relying on a place after the purchase. (Region Brittany, Port of Lorient)

What ownership check is separate from the condition survey?

The Maritime Ministry recommends investigating the yacht's mortgage position with the competent commercial court before purchase. As practical advice, have a locally qualified adviser make that enquiry and check the seller's authority while the surveyor reviews physical condition. Keep the registration records and documentary findings in the same purchase file without treating either a marina location or the condition report as proof of clear title. (French Maritime Ministry, buying and registering sea-going boats)

Who needs to agree when the yacht is co-owned?

The Ministry requires every co-owner to confirm online consent in the eligible transfer process and lists a sale document signed by the parties identifying the boat and parties. As practical advice, establish the ownership arrangement early and organise signatures and confirmations before handover. Retain the completed transfer record with the sale file while the people needed to resolve an omission remain available. (French Maritime Ministry, buying and registering sea-going boats)
