THE EYB COUNTRY GUIDES · Spain
Build an itemised berth budget and understand the public charges and operator conditions that can affect it.
By Peter Mattey · 9 min read · Facts checked 2026-10-03
Berth costs Spain should be assessed for the actual yacht, port and dates. A public port charge, a marina's own berthing arrangement and separately billed services are different parts of the budget. Buyers need somewhere suitable to keep the boat after completion; sellers need to settle the costs agreed for its stay during the sale. This guide uses verified state-port rules and a clearly identified Balearic public operator example rather than inventing an average national berth price.
The guide explains charging dimensions, separate services and the practical order of making a reservation. Ports IB's transit conditions illustrate why duration, cancellation and insurance deserve checking before payment. Its conditions apply to that operator's directly managed ports; request the actual current quotation and terms from your chosen marina. A berth budget needs the actual port and booking arrangement. In the state-port framework, the recreational boat charge concerns use of the port service-area waters and access to, and stay at, the assigned berth or anchorage. This guide does not treat that legal charge as a complete marina invoice. As a practical recommendation, ask the operator to identify its berthing price, any public port charge and the services included. Compare written totals for the same vessel and dates rather than relying on an unsourced Spanish average.
The statutory state-port calculation takes account of the area occupied by the boat, using overall length multiplied by beam, and the days of stay, including part-days under the prescribed arrangements. Berth type and the installation's concession position also affect the applicable calculation. As practical advice, supply the vessel's documented dimensions and ask the operator to confirm the charging basis. A narrow monohull and a wider yacht cannot be compared accurately using a length-only headline unless the actual tariff explains that basis.
Water and electricity consumption are billed independently of the state-port recreational boat charge. Lifting, launching, hauling out and the relevant machinery are also outside that charge and may have their own tariff. As a practical recommendation, ask for a complete berth and yard quotation if a purchase includes a lift for survey or a period ashore. Keep recurring berth costs apart from the agreed survey and delivery programme so that you can see which expenses arise from keeping the boat and which arise from the transaction.
Broker tip: Practical recommendation: ask for an itemised written total using the boat's actual overall length, beam and proposed dates. Confirm whether utilities, public charges, lifting and storage are included before comparing alternatives. A related question is answered in our guide on what boat insurance you need in Spain.

Ports IB's public online system provides a documented example for directly managed Balearic ports. Its terms require user registration and vessel details including length, beam, draught and flag. Supporting vessel documentation is required, with an official identification document accepted for foreign-flagged boats. As practical advice, assemble the yacht's records before booking and ask the port how it will accommodate the buyer's planned arrival. These conditions belong to this operator's system; they are not presented as a universal application procedure for every Spanish marina.
The linked transit terms require requests at least 1 day in advance and limit an online berth reservation at a port to 5 days without extension. Successive reservations cannot be used to prolong that maximum stay. As a practical recommendation, check whether your survey, completion and delivery programme needs a different arrangement rather than assuming a short transit booking can become a home berth. The operator's time limits are conditions of this booking system, not an estimate of how long a boat purchase should take.
The reservation is vessel-specific. Ports IB prohibits changing the boat and says arrival with vessel details that do not match the reservation will result in refusal of the berth. As practical advice, check names, registration and dimensions before payment, especially when the buyer intends to rename or re-register the yacht. Ask the operator directly how to deal with a documented ownership change. Do not transfer a seller's reservation informally or assume that an available space for a smaller boat is a confirmed berth for the yacht you are buying.
Broker tip: Practical recommendation: confirm a berth in writing before making the purchase depend on keeping the yacht there. Give the port the actual boat documents, proposed ownership change and planned survey or delivery dates together. See also our guide on how to buy a boat in Spain.

Section 3
Ports IB's transit conditions state that the applicable berthing charges come from the Balearic statutory fees framework and show the amount on the payment page. Confirmation follows payment, and online payment is by credit or debit card. As practical advice, retain the displayed total and confirmation alongside the booking. This guide quotes no current euro rate from the linked tariff sheets because the opened sheets are labelled with an earlier tariff year; an operator-confirmed current amount is needed before using them in a purchase budget.
The same transit conditions state that paying berth rights does not confer entitlement to additional services. The public fees index separately identifies recreational boat charges, water and electricity supplies, storage, lifting equipment and slipways. As a practical recommendation, ask which services the particular yacht needs and request the applicable charges for those services. Treat a quoted berth price as a starting point for an itemised budget, and avoid assuming that a utility connection or a lifting operation is included simply because it is available at the port.
For state ports, liability for the recreational boat charge is assigned jointly to the vessel owner, agent and skipper under the statutory provision, with a concessionaire or authorised operator acting as substitute taxpayer in the stated concession arrangements. That is a public-charge rule rather than a negotiated allocation between buyer and seller. As practical advice, agree who pays which booked services before handover and ask the operator to confirm its billing position. Keep outstanding invoices and the final settlement record with the purchase documents. No verified nationwide average berth cost, private-marina tariff or regional price premium is supplied. Ports IB's fee sheets linked from its live index are labelled 2024; their monetary amounts are not presented as 2026 rates and the operator should confirm current payable totals. For these, email us at info@europeanyachtbrokers.com for the latest information.
Broker tip: Practical recommendation: keep the dated quotation and payment confirmation together. Ask the operator to price the services you actually need and agree the buyer's and seller's responsibility for outstanding costs in writing before handover. Cancellation rules can change the cost of a survey or completion plan. Under the linked Ports IB transit terms, a user cancellation made through the online system at least 36 hours before the authorised start returns 50% of the amount paid. Failure to arrive on the booked entry date results in cancellation without refund under the stated no-show rule. As a practical recommendation, read the cancellation conditions before reserving a berth for a sale-related visit and identify who bears the cost if the purchase timetable changes.
Date or port changes after payment are conditional. Ports IB requires at least 36 hours' advance action through the online booking system, available space and compliance with the stated reservation restrictions, and it prohibits moving a reservation between the defined high and low seasons. Its high-season period is 1 June to 30 September. As practical advice, ask the operator about a changed trial or collection date before committing to travel; do not assume that the original payment creates an unrestricted credit usable at any time.
The operator also requires evidence of insurance meeting the compulsory recreational boat liability regulation and including sinking and wreck removal cover. At arrival, the boat documents and booking confirmation must be presented for verification under the terms. As a practical recommendation, send the insurance wording to the port if you are uncertain about those additional conditions, and retain its response. A national liability certificate does not by itself answer every berth-contract condition, and these operator requirements should not be described as identical throughout Spain.
Broker tip: Practical recommendation: build cancellation and insurance checks into the berth decision. Ask the operator to confirm how a postponed handover affects the booking, and keep that answer with the sale timetable before paying for travel. Your questions
Not necessarily: the state-port Act says water and electricity consumption is invoiced separately from its recreational boat charge. Ports IB's transit terms also state that paying berth rights does not entitle the user to additional services. As a practical recommendation, ask the actual operator for an itemised quotation showing connections, consumption and any other required service before comparing berth totals. (BOE, State Ports and Merchant Marine Act; Ports IB, online transit berth conditions)
No: the statutory occupied area is overall length multiplied by beam, and the applicable calculation also considers stay and the stated berth or installation arrangement. As practical advice, give the operator the documented dimensions and proposed dates and request its written calculation. This guide does not quote a universal marina rate or assume that the state-port charge is the complete amount payable for every Spanish berth. (BOE, State Ports and Merchant Marine Act)
The published online transit terms limit a booking at a port to 5 non-extendable days and prohibit successive reservations intended to prolong the maximum stay. As a practical recommendation, ask the operator about an appropriate separate arrangement if you intend to keep the yacht there after purchase. A short transit booking should not be treated as confirmation of a long-term base berth. (Ports IB, online transit berth conditions)
The current linked terms provide a 50% refund for a user cancellation made through the system at least 36 hours before the authorised start. The stated no-show rule gives no reimbursement if the booked vessel does not arrive on its entry date. As practical advice, check those conditions before paying for a sale-related stay and agree who bears the booking cost if completion is postponed. (Ports IB, online transit berth conditions)
Ports IB's linked transit conditions require compulsory recreational liability protection and sinking and wreck-removal cover. That is a condition of this operator's booked berth, rather than a statement of every Spanish marina's terms. As a practical recommendation, send the relevant policy evidence to the port before arrival and ask it to confirm whether the insurance offered meets the actual booking requirements. (Ports IB, online transit berth conditions)
