How Much Is Your Boat Worth in Spain? 2027 Guide

Understand the evidence to request for a yacht assessment and how Spain's 2026 tax tables treat boats and engines.

By Peter Mattey · 9 min read · Facts checked 2026-10-03

Boat valuation Spain starts with the purpose of the figure. A seller's asking-price recommendation, a buyer's assessment of a yacht and an official tax-value calculation are different tasks. The useful question is how the amount was reached and what evidence supports it. This guide explains the current official tax framework and a practical approach to organising the vessel file, without inventing market averages, regional premiums or guaranteed discounts on advertised yacht prices.

The guide is for buyers and sellers who want to question a valuation intelligently. It covers identity and modification records, the current boat-and-engine tax method and the way tax disagreements are addressed. Commercial comparison and condition-review suggestions are labelled as practical recommendations; they are not presented as an official brokerage valuation standard. Section 1

An asking-price assessment and a tax value have different jobs

Begin by asking what the valuation is intended to support. A seller deciding an asking price and a taxpayer preparing the relevant return need different explanations. The official transport valuation order took effect on 1 January 2026 and authorises its average prices as value-checking tools for the named transfer, inheritance/gift and special transport taxes. As a practical recommendation, identify the purpose in the instructions you give a broker or adviser. Do not use an unexplained figure simply because it appears in an official table.

The current order replaces the previous annual tables. That makes the applicable year part of the tax calculation rather than a minor detail in the paperwork. As practical advice, ask the adviser to state the order used, the selected boat entry and the engine information relied on. For an asking-price assessment, request a separate explanation based on the actual yacht, its condition and the evidence being compared. This is a recommended way to make the discussion reviewable, not an officially prescribed brokerage formula or an unsupported market-price forecast.

The General Tax Act recognises several value-checking methods, including average market prices and administrative experts' opinions, with the applicable tax's rules governing use of the methods. That is the legal setting for the tax tables. As a practical recommendation, keep the tax worksheet apart from the sale-price recommendation and ask the adviser to explain any difference in their purposes or assumptions. This guide quotes no typical negotiation discount, regional premium or universal depreciation rate for the commercial sale of a particular yacht.

Broker tip: Practical recommendation: state whether you need an asking-price assessment or a tax calculation before commissioning the work. Request a written explanation of the evidence and assumptions and keep the outputs separate in the sale file. Our guide on how to prepare a boat for sale in Spain covers a related point.

Section 2

Build a reliable file for the actual yacht

An assessment needs a clear vessel identity. The registration decree describes the registration record (hoja de asiento) as containing information about the boat, and defines the identification number (CIN) as including construction and model-year information. As a practical recommendation, compare that record with the hull identification and the seller's documents before selecting an entry in a table or a comparable advertisement. Ask the assessor to record any uncertainty rather than treating a similar model name as proof that it is the same specification.

Major repairs, reforms and specified engine changes are registrable acts under the decree. For a valuation review, that provides a useful documentary starting point for identifying what has changed. As practical advice, request the relevant recorded information, invoices and supporting technical records and ask a competent surveyor to assess physical condition within an agreed scope. This guide does not claim that spending on equipment automatically adds the same amount to the sale price, or that a particular engine-hour reading proves a fixed percentage change in value.

Ownership documentation deserves its own review. The decree defines a transfer as a documented ownership change established by a legally valid means. As a practical recommendation, ask a locally qualified adviser to check the ownership and sale documents and ask the assessor to identify assumptions about title, included equipment and the intended transaction. For commercial comparisons, request evidence explaining why the selected boats are relevant and distinguish advertised asking amounts from any completed-sale evidence available to the assessor. This is a practical research method, not an assertion about an unverified national market.

Broker tip: Practical recommendation: give the assessor the actual registration record, hull identification, engine details and evidence of modifications. Ask it to identify missing documents and explain how condition findings and comparison choices affect its commercial assessment. Section 3

How the official boat and engine tax method works

The current annual order values the boat without its engine and the propulsion separately, applies the prescribed age percentages and then adds the updated values. Its annex instructions distinguish the hull from the propulsion equipment's own age. As a practical recommendation, give the tax adviser evidence identifying both rather than assuming the engine is original. Keep the calculation traceable to the actual vessel and relevant annex entry. The guide does not supply a made-up boat price or attempt to calculate a taxable value without a specified yacht.

The engine annex bases combustion-engine values on actual mechanical power and fuel type and separately provides electric-engine tables. As practical advice, use the documented engine specification and ask the adviser to explain the correct category. An informal horsepower description should not replace the power evidence needed for the calculation. For a commercial appraisal, ask the assessor to review the engine's physical condition and supporting service records separately; this recommendation does not imply that the tax table measures maintenance quality or establishes a buyer's likely negotiated offer.

The tax age table gives different percentages for hulls and engines. For more than 20 years of use, it lists 20% for sailing vessels and motor-boat hulls and 10% for marine engines and personal watercraft. Personal watercraft are valued together rather than by separating hull and engine. As a practical recommendation, have the adviser check the actual age band and calculation category. These are the order's tax-valuation instructions, so the guide does not turn them into a universal commercial depreciation schedule or a prediction of sale proceeds. No official broker-specific commercial appraisal standard, customary valuation fee or market-wide selling-price dataset was verified. No typical asking-to-selling discount, regional premium, seasonal price effect or commercial depreciation percentage is asserted. For these, email us at info@europeanyachtbrokers.com for the latest information.

Broker tip: Practical recommendation: ask the tax adviser for the selected vessel entry, engine category and separate age assumptions. Retain the supporting specification documents and keep the statutory worksheet apart from any commercial asking-price recommendation. Section 4

Check the reasoning and know how tax disagreements are handled

A reviewable valuation explains its evidence rather than only reporting a final amount. Under the General Tax Act, a person asserting a right in tax procedures must establish the facts supporting it. As a practical recommendation, keep acquisition, identification and condition evidence organised so that the adviser can explain the basis of a relevant tax position. If the authority proposes a different value, the Act requires a reasoned proposal showing the methods and criteria used. Read those reasons with the adviser before deciding how to respond.

The Act provides a contradictory expert valuation route (tasación pericial contradictoria) for the specified tax-value disagreements. Its provisions distinguish that process from challenging an ordinary sale-price recommendation, and allow valuation issues to be raised through the applicable challenge to the regularisation act. As practical advice, ask a locally qualified tax adviser which procedure fits the actual notice and its deadlines. Do not borrow an appeal timetable from another transaction or assume that disagreeing informally with the figure is sufficient to protect the available procedural options.

For the stated contradictory-expert process, the Act requires an administrative expert's valuation where the checked amount was not established by such an expert opinion. That is another reason to identify how a value was obtained. As a practical recommendation, ask for the complete calculation and relevant supporting documents rather than comparing only totals. For a sale-price assessment, agree when it should be revisited if inspection evidence, included equipment or the sale plan changes. The research does not establish a customary broker appraisal fee or an officially fixed commercial sale price.

Broker tip: Practical recommendation: ask the assessor or adviser to show how the figure was reached and which assumptions remain. If a tax notice disputes your declared value, obtain advice on the actual notice and procedure before responding. Readers often go on to our guide on whether you need a boat survey in Spain. Your questions

Frequently asked questions

Is an official tax-table value the same task as setting an asking price?

The official order authorises its average prices as value-checking tools for the named transfer, inheritance/gift and special transport taxes. As a practical recommendation, commission an asking-price assessment separately and ask the assessor to explain the actual yacht evidence and comparisons used. Keep the tax worksheet and commercial recommendation distinct rather than relying on an unexplained total for both decisions. (BOE, 2026 transport valuation order)

Which official transport valuation order applies for 2026?

Order HAC/1501/2025 entered into force on 1 January 2026 and replaced the previous annual annex tables. As a practical recommendation, ask the tax adviser to state the order, vessel entry and engine category used in the calculation. This guide provides no specific yacht valuation and does not treat a table entry as proof of the condition or negotiated sale price of an individual boat. (BOE, 2026 transport valuation order)

Does the tax calculation treat a replacement engine separately?

The order values the boat without propulsion and the engine separately, applies the relevant age percentages and adds the updated values; its instructions address the propulsion equipment's own age. As practical advice, provide evidence identifying the actual engine rather than assuming it has the hull's age. Ask the adviser to show the selected category and age assumptions clearly in the worksheet. (BOE, 2026 transport valuation order)

What records should I give the assessor?

As a practical recommendation, supply the registration record, hull identification, documented engine details and evidence of modifications and condition. The registration decree defines the vessel record and identification data and treats specified repairs, reforms and non-outboard engine changes as registrable acts. Ask the assessor to identify gaps and explain its commercial comparison choices rather than inferring a fixed price adjustment from an unsupported engine-hour or equipment rule. (BOE, recreational boat registration regulation)

What if the tax authority proposes a different value?

The General Tax Act requires a reasoned proposal identifying the methods and criteria and provides the specified contradictory expert valuation and challenge routes. As a practical recommendation, ask a locally qualified tax adviser to review the actual notice and explain the applicable process before responding. This guide does not supply a universal appeal timetable or treat a disagreement about an asking-price recommendation as the same procedure. (BOE, General Tax Act)

What if my question is not answered in this guide?

This guide only includes facts checked against official sources. For anything it does not cover, email us at info@europeanyachtbrokers.com for the latest information, and ask a locally qualified adviser to confirm the position for your own boat.
