How to Buy a Boat in Dalmatia, Croatia in 2027: Checks and Costs

Check local administration, berth arrangements, the purchase file and agreed costs before committing to a boat in Dalmatia.

By Peter Mattey · 9 min read · Facts checked 2026-10-03

Buying a boat Dalmatia research needs to connect the particular craft with its harbour, inspection access and documentary route. Split, Trogir and the islands served by the Split Harbourmaster's branches offer different meeting and filing locations. The buyer should establish the actual registration and the berth operator before planning completion. This guide uses the Split area as a documented local example within Croatia, including the county port authority's vessel-replacement procedure, without treating that example as a rule for every Dalmatian marina.

The guide is for buyers planning a viewing and purchase in Dalmatia. It covers the verified local administration route, an actual berth-approval process and national purchase checks. Practical recommendations help organise the inspection and completion file; a locally qualified lawyer should assess the individual sale, particularly where the craft remains under a foreign flag. Section 1

Plan the local administration and inspection route

For a Split-area purchase, identify the office relevant to the craft before scheduling document appointments. The Ministry lists a dedicated vessel-registration contact for the Split Harbourmaster's Office, separate from its navigation-safety inspection contact. Our recommendation is to send the documentary identity and proposed registration outcome to the registry team and ask where the request should be handled. The boat's location at a viewing does not by itself resolve that question. Keep any reply with the purchase file so the buyer and seller prepare for the same route.

The official Split page lists branches including Trogir, Hvar, Vis and Komiža. Our recommendation is to agree the boat's actual inspection location with the seller and surveyor, then identify the office and providers serving that location. An island viewing needs its own access arrangements; this guide does not invent ferry timetables, yard lifting capacity or an inspection appointment. Ask the surveyor what access is needed aboard and obtain the relevant provider's confirmation before making the journey or accepting a fixed completion date.

Public service hours are published separately from the office's continuous maritime-traffic duty service. Our recommendation is to arrange a registry enquiry during the published public-service window and avoid assuming an emergency or traffic contact handles ownership documents at any hour. The opening schedule does not establish the time needed to accept an individual request. Prepare the transaction summary and document questions beforehand so the office can clarify the filing route without having to infer the boat's status from an advertisement or an incomplete sales email.

Broker tip: Our recommendation is to send the documented vessel identity and proposed transaction to the registry contact before booking travel. Keep inspection access and document filing as separate tasks, with a named contact for each. Readers often go on to our guide on how to buy a boat in Croatia.

Section 2

Check the berth arrangement before the purchase

A boat purchase and a berth arrangement should be checked separately. The Split-Dalmatia County Port Authority publishes a request procedure for replacing a craft on a permanent berth in its communal, fishing and anchorage areas. Our recommendation is to establish whether this is the scheme relevant to the intended berth and whether the buyer is replacing a craft they are entitled to keep there. The published replacement procedure should not be represented as a promise that a seller's berth automatically passes with the boat.

The authority assesses the replacement against the available berth space and the craft's length and beam. It states that a replacement failing the physical requirements will be refused. Our recommendation is to provide the actual documented dimensions before committing to a purchase that depends on the berth. Photographs of the seller's boat fitting alongside do not establish approval for another craft or another holder. Agree the planned location after completion and keep any unresolved berth condition explicit in the purchase negotiations.

The replacement craft cannot be tied in the port before the county authority approves it. Its instructions permit the request to be delivered by post, in person or as a scan to the named operational email. Our recommendation is to seek the written decision before arranging movement into the berth and retain the submission record. The procedure provides a genuine local planning point but does not publish live availability or a standard decision period. Arrange a separate temporary or onward location where the necessary approval remains unresolved.

Broker tip: Our recommendation is to ask the berth operator about the buyer and the actual vessel before accepting any included-berth claim. Keep the written response with the purchase terms and arrange an alternative if approval is unresolved. Our guide on whether you need a boat survey in Croatia covers a related point.

Section 3

Separate document costs and the buyer's filing

A Split-area viewing should lead to an itemised transaction budget, not an assumed regional package. The Ministry states that a boat registration sheet is issued without charge, while its first-registration guidance identifies separate documentary expenses. Our recommendation is to establish whether the craft stays in the Croatian register or enters from abroad, then request only the services that route actually needs. Do not add translation, foreign deletion or apostille costs automatically to every local ownership change, and do not treat the free sheet as evidence that professional services cost nothing.

Agree the delivery location alongside the purchase price. The Civil Obligations Act provides a default allocation of delivery and preceding expenses to the seller, with removal and subsequent expenses assigned to the buyer unless agreed otherwise. Our recommendation is to describe any movement from an island berth, lifting for the agreed inspection or onward delivery as separate quoted tasks. A service booked for convenience should have an identified payer. No universal Dalmatian lifting or survey price is asserted; obtain the provider's actual boat-specific quotation.

For a boat already registered in Croatia, prepare the new owner's register-change request alongside completion. The Ministry gives the buyer a period measured from acquiring ownership rights, rather than from the next convenient visit to Split. Our recommendation is to assign who prepares and submits the bundle, identify the originals needed and keep the filing evidence with the handover record. The local office contact can clarify the individual route. Published opening hours and the national filing responsibility should not be turned into an invented regional processing delay. No verified live berth availability, region-wide waiting period or seasonal purchase-processing delay was established. No universal regional survey, lifting, brokerage or document-service tariff was verified. For these, email us at info@europeanyachtbrokers.com for the latest information.

Broker tip: Our recommendation is to request quotations for the actual document and delivery services, then assign each cost in writing. Prepare the buyer's register-change request alongside completion instead of leaving the filing until after departure. Section 4

Reconcile the description, title and restriction record

Compare the accepted specification with the survey findings before the final document is signed. The amended Civil Obligations Act treats departure from the agreed description and characteristics as a material defect. Our recommendation is to identify any promised repairs, untested equipment and excluded possessions in the purchase file. The boat's attractive location in a Dalmatian harbour is not evidence of its mechanical condition or of a promise that every photographed item is included. Retain the seller's written response to material observations so the final agreement reflects the actual accepted condition.

Review the restriction record as well as the seller's identity. The Ministry places mortgages, specified charter rights and other disposal restrictions in Sheet C of the Croatian register. The Act addresses undisclosed third-party rights that limit the buyer's right where the buyer did not accept that restriction. Our recommendation is to have the lawyer reconcile any lender or charter arrangement with the proposed completion. A boat available for viewing outside charter use should not be assumed to be free of contractual or registered restrictions on the intended transfer.

Confirm the transaction-document formalities with the Harbourmaster's Office before arranging signature. The Ministry requires a written legal transaction with a certified signature of the person whose right is transferred when ownership is obtained through that transaction. Our recommendation is to check the seller's signing authority and document authentication route, then connect the original-document delivery plan with completion. If the boat remains under a foreign register, ask the lawyer to assess that register's title route separately. The local viewing address does not settle the applicable transfer requirements.

Broker tip: Our recommendation is to compare the specification, inspection findings and restriction record before signing. Have a locally qualified lawyer review the disclosure and release arrangements, then confirm the authenticated document requirements with the relevant office. Your questions

Frequently asked questions

Does a Split-area berth automatically come with the boat?

The opened county instructions do not establish automatic berth transfer with a purchase. They describe a specific vessel-replacement request and approval process for permanent berths in the stated areas. Our recommendation is to ask the actual operator about the buyer's arrangement and the craft before accepting an included-berth claim. Keep approval separate from the sale and arrange another location where the berth position is unresolved. (Split-Dalmatia County Port Authority)

Can I put a replacement boat on the county berth while approval is pending?

No. The published replacement procedure says the craft must not be berthed before approval. The authority also checks available space, length and beam and refuses a replacement that does not meet those requirements. Our recommendation is to submit the documented dimensions and obtain the response before arranging movement into the berth. A successful submission or a seller's assurance should not be treated as the required approval. (Split-Dalmatia County Port Authority)

Which Split contact handles vessel-registration enquiries?

The Ministry lists a dedicated Split vessel-registration contact, separate from the navigation-safety inspection contact. Our recommendation is to send the documented craft identity and proposed registration outcome to that team before booking a visit. The official page also identifies mainland and island branches, so ask where the individual filing should be handled. Public-service hours are a planning aid, not evidence that the application will be accepted at a particular appointment. (Ministry of the Sea, Transport and Infrastructure)

Are document expenses identical for every Dalmatian purchase?

No. The Ministry's document-cost examples concern first registration and should not be applied automatically to every ownership change. Our recommendation is to establish the register route and obtain quotations for the actual translation, authentication or foreign deletion work it needs. Keep the free registration-sheet statement separate from provider services. Agree the delivery expense allocation in writing so the budget describes the individual transaction rather than an unsupported regional package. (Narodne novine; Ministry of the Sea, Transport and Infrastructure)

What should I check before signing after the survey?

Check the accepted description and condition, seller identity, restriction record and transaction-document requirements together. The amended Act addresses the agreed characteristics, while Ministry guidance describes the encumbrance sheet and authenticated written transaction. Our recommendation is to have a locally qualified lawyer reconcile the inspection findings, seller disclosures and any release arrangement with the final agreement. The berth decision remains a separate question for the actual operator. (Narodne novine; Ministry of the Sea, Transport and Infrastructure)
