THE EYB COUNTRY GUIDES · Greece
Plan a useful condition assessment and distinguish it from the boat's official navigation documents.

Boat survey Greece decisions should begin with a clear question: what do you need to know about this vessel before buying it? A condition assessment, conformity documentation and official navigation permission answer different questions. This guide explains verified small-craft administrative provisions and gives clearly labelled practical recommendations for arranging a purchase survey. It does not invent a nationwide inspection obligation, survey fee or repair threshold for every yacht offered for sale.
It is for buyers and sellers organising access, records and a decision after inspection. The official procedures used here have specific length and document scopes; they are not a universal yacht-survey standard. Confirm current requirements with the relevant maritime authority or a qualified adviser for the actual vessel, registration and intended voyage. Our recommendation is to treat a purchase survey as an agreed assessment of the boat you may buy, and official navigation paperwork as a separate compliance check. A buyer needs to know what was inspected, what was inaccessible and which questions remain. The Hellenic Coast Guard's current procedure for issuing a recreational-craft navigation permit up to ten metres expressly says no initial inspection is carried out. That specific statement should not be expanded into a claim that every Greek boat is exempt from official inspections or that no condition assessment is useful.
The same official service states that its navigation permit is valid for four years. Our recommendation is to record the document's actual expiry and scope, then compare it with the proposed use. A currently valid permit and an independent purchase report are different forms of evidence. Ask the surveyor to identify the boat and date the findings, and ask the maritime authority about applicable navigation requirements. Neither an advertisement nor an old report should be described as establishing the condition of every system at the point of purchase.
Our recommendation is to ask the surveyor for a written scope tailored to the vessel and your concerns. Decide whether the assessment includes an out-of-water inspection, a machinery test, rig inspection or sea trial, and identify specialist work separately. These are recommended choices, not verified universal Greek legal requirements. No opened official page establishes a mandatory independent survey for every private purchase, a standard survey duration or an official private-survey price. This guide leaves those claims out and keeps the authority's specific permit procedures within their stated limits.
Broker tip: Our recommendation is to ask separately what the survey will assess and what the authority requires for navigation. Keep the inspection scope and official permit evidence in different parts of the purchase file. Readers often go on to our guide on how to buy a boat in Greece.

Section 2
The official small-craft permit documentation provides a useful starting point for checking technical records. For craft subject to CE requirements, the e-DLA procedure lists a declaration of conformity and a certificate from the person issuing it concerning construction and safe use. Our recommendation is to match those papers to the actual boat before asking a surveyor to interpret them. A missing conformity document is a question for the relevant procedure, not something a commercial purchase survey should automatically be described as replacing without authority confirmation.
The same e-DLA page describes a possible post-construction conformity-assessment certificate from a notified body when the declaration of conformity is unavailable, under the stated legal provisions. It also describes a substitute for the issuer's supporting certificate where that certificate cannot be obtained, such as when the manufacturer no longer operates. Our recommendation is to ask the maritime authority which alternative fits the vessel's circumstances. Do not collapse those distinct documents into a promise that any professional can sign a generic report and resolve all missing-paperwork problems.
The Mitos navigation-permit procedure for recreational craft above ten metres and up to twelve metres also lists technical documentation and conditional alternatives. Its stated supporting construction certificate includes matters such as permitted occupants, maximum load and machinery information. Our recommendation is to give the surveyor copies and ask how the recorded limits relate to your intended use. Keep documentary limits separate from the condition assessment. This specific procedure is not a survey standard for every yacht, and its length range should not be assumed to cover larger or foreign-registered vessels.
Broker tip: Our recommendation is to identify exactly which technical document is missing before commissioning replacement work. Ask the authority about the stated alternative route and tell the surveyor what has been confirmed. Our guide on what boat insurance you need in Greece covers a related point.

Section 3
Our recommendation is to request a written quote covering the intended inspection, report, travel and any specialist assessment. Ask separately about the marina or yard's access, lift and launch arrangements, and agree who pays. Those figures are transaction-specific quotations, not official amounts supplied by this guide. Do not infer a private-survey fee from the cost of a navigation permit. The opened official procedures concern administrative documents, and no verified national tariff for an independent pre-purchase condition survey has been established here.
For renewal of the stated recreational-craft navigation permit up to ten metres, Mitos says renewal occurs every four years with the owner applying within the final six months before expiry. Our recommendation is to check the actual permit and renewal position while planning the purchase. That timetable concerns the administrative permit, not how often a buyer should commission an independent survey. If the boat's paperwork is close to expiry, ask the authority what must happen before the intended voyage rather than treating your survey appointment as completing renewal.
The same Mitos renewal procedure describes a digital application and states that the permit must be aboard and produced when requested by port officers. It prohibits operation where the permit is absent or expired within its stated scope. Our recommendation is to plan report delivery, repairs and administrative readiness as separate milestones. A completed condition report does not itself renew a permit. Avoid promising a collection date until the relevant parties have confirmed access, documentation and any agreed remedial work, without inventing a customary processing delay for the area. No mandatory independent purchase survey for every boat, official private-survey tariff, standard duration or repair-price formula verified. Independent survey scope, sea trial, specialist inspection and contract conditions are recommendations, not legal duties asserted by this guide. For these, email us at info@europeanyachtbrokers.com for the latest information.
Broker tip: Our recommendation is to obtain separate quotes for inspection and yard work, then check the permit's expiry. A survey booking and an administrative renewal are different tasks and should have separate completion evidence. A related question is answered in our guide on boat valuation in Greece.

Our recommendation is to read a purchase report for its limitations as well as its findings. Ask which areas were inaccessible, which equipment was demonstrated and which conclusions require further specialist work. Use the report to agree specific conditions or repairs in writing, rather than asking the surveyor to guarantee the whole boat. If a finding affects suitability for your intended voyage, obtain clarification before committing. These are recommended decision steps; the official permit pages do not establish a universal repair threshold or mandatory renegotiation formula for a private sale.
The Mitos renewal procedure requires the craft to be in good condition, with the equipment required for its permitted voyages and maximum occupants in satisfactory condition and within expiry where applicable. Our recommendation is to ask how the report's findings relate to those documented limits and any unresolved equipment issue. That condition requirement is not evidence that an independent purchase survey has inspected everything the authority may require. Keep the distinction visible when you explain to the seller which issues you want addressed before completion.
The current e-DLA issuance page describes a new permit after alteration of the boat, as well as its stated cases involving expiry or loss and damage of older paper permits. Our recommendation is to ask the authority whether any recorded modification affects the documents before accepting a seller's assurance that the existing permit settles it. Mitos's permit issuance procedure also describes refusal where required documents are not supplied. Assemble both technical and administrative answers before deciding that a satisfactory condition report is sufficient to proceed with the purchase.
Broker tip: Our recommendation is to translate each unresolved finding into a specific action, document or agreed condition. Confirm any modification with the authority rather than assuming the condition report settles the navigation paperwork. See also our guide on whether you pay VAT on a boat in Greece. Your questions
No, this guide treats them separately. The e-DLA recreational-craft permit procedure up to ten metres expressly says no initial inspection is carried out. That statement concerns the stated administrative procedure, not every yacht or an independent purchase assessment. Our recommendation is to agree the condition-survey scope separately and ask the authority which navigation requirements apply to the particular vessel. (Hellenic Coast Guard — e-DLA)
No automatic replacement has been established here. The e-DLA procedure describes particular conformity documents and specified alternatives, including a notified body's post-construction assessment certificate where the declaration is unavailable. Our recommendation is to identify the missing document and confirm the applicable alternative with the authority, rather than describe an ordinary purchase survey as satisfying every technical-document requirement. (Hellenic Coast Guard — e-DLA)
Mitos states renewal every four years for the navigation permit up to ten metres, with application during the final six months before expiry. This is an administrative timetable, not a frequency requirement for independent purchase surveys. Our recommendation is to check the actual permit and organise any necessary renewal separately from the inspection and purchase decision. (Mitos)
No, the stated Mitos renewal procedure prohibits operation without the required permit or where it has expired. It also requires the permit to be aboard and produced when requested. Our recommendation is to keep official navigation-document readiness separate from a surveyor's condition findings, and confirm the boat's actual permitted use with the authority before planning a voyage. (Mitos)
Ask the authority whether the modification affects the permit. The current e-DLA issuance page identifies alteration of the craft among the cases requiring a new navigation permit within its stated scope. Our recommendation is to document the change and obtain the relevant answer before relying on existing papers; a condition report is not presented here as completing that administrative step. (Hellenic Coast Guard — e-DLA)
