How to Buy a Boat in the Dodecanese, Greece in 2027: Checks and Costs

Confirm the actual marina arrangement, inspect independently and verify the applicable Greek ownership route.

By Peter Mattey · 9 min read · Facts checked 2026-10-03

This buying a boat Dodecanese guide focuses on a careful purchase in Kos or Rhodes without inventing a regional market story. An official Kos port calculator offers useful budgeting evidence, while Mitos and AADE explain relevant Greek ownership and cruising-fee procedures. A berth calculation does not prove availability or transferable rights, and a convenient location does not replace inspection. Practical checks are labelled as recommendations so verified rules remain distinct from advice about organising the purchase.

Start by confirming the yacht's actual location, flag and register. Obtain the intended port's written answers on access and future berthing, then plan condition and document checks before final payment. Confirm current requirements with the relevant authority or a qualified adviser, especially where the vessel follows a foreign registration or customs route. Check the exact Kos or Rhodes berth arrangement

When buying in the Dodecanese, our recommendation is to establish the yacht's actual location in Kos or Rhodes and ask the relevant managing body about inspection access and future berthing. The Municipal Port Fund of Kos publishes an official calculator, but its page expressly says amounts are indicative and individual port bodies may apply their own tariffs. That warning matters to a purchaser: a calculation is not allocation of a place, evidence of ownership or confirmation that the buyer can inherit the seller's arrangement.

The Kos calculator's published tariff table states effectiveness from the eighth of July 2021 and gives private pleasure-vessel annual rates per metre in length bands. For lengths from 7.01 to ten metres it gives one hundred and fifty euros per metre per year; from 10.01 to fifteen metres, one hundred and seventy; from 15.01 metres upwards, two hundred. Our recommendation is to obtain a written confirmation for the intended port and dates before using those published base figures in a purchase budget or assuming they include every service.

The Kos calculator converts an annual boat charge into a daily charge by dividing by three hundred and sixty-five and rounding to two decimal places, and gives a twenty-five per cent addition for alongside rather than stern berthing. Our recommendation is to ask which arrangement is authorised for the intended boat and obtain a current complete written quote. Do not use the Kos table as a Rhodes tariff or infer local shortages, seasonal price premiums or a transferable berth from the displayed method.

Broker tip: Our recommendation is to confirm the actual port, viewing access and buyer's berth arrangement directly. Treat the Kos calculator as indicative and obtain the intended managing body's complete written proposal. A related question is answered in our guide on how to buy a boat in Greece.

Section 2

Check the title route before agreeing completion

For vessels within the stated Greek registered-ship and registered-small-vessel transfer procedure, Mitos identifies the port authority's registry department as the receiving service. Our recommendation is to establish the vessel's actual register and flag before deciding which paperwork to request. A yacht moored near Athens is not necessarily registered under that procedure. Ask the seller for the recorded owner and vessel identifiers, then have the relevant authority or a qualified adviser confirm the route that applies to this particular sale and buyer.

The current Mitos procedure requires a seller-and-buyer sale instrument with signatures authenticated by a public authority or through the stated government service. It also makes clear that ownership does not transfer without entry in the ship register for that procedure. Our recommendation is to build the completion plan around the applicable registration step rather than treat payment or delivery alone as sufficient. Confirm who will lodge the documents and what evidence the buyer will receive once the administrative record has been updated.

Our recommendation is to commission an independent condition inspection and agree the permitted scope of any sea trial in writing. Match the boat's identity and equipment to the sale description, and ask how findings will affect the agreement. These are buyer-protection recommendations, not verified universal survey requirements. Keep the condition decision distinct from the title decision: a technically satisfactory inspection is not evidence that the person signing can transfer ownership. Do not release the balance simply because a viewing or trial has gone well.

Broker tip: Our recommendation is to confirm the actual flag and register first, then obtain the authority's document list. Keep condition inspection and legal title checks separate before agreeing the payment sequence. See also our guide on whether you need a boat survey in Greece.

Section 3

Budget the cruising fee separately from a berth

AADE's January 2026 FAQ places qualifying private sailing and motorised pleasure boats over seven metres overall in Greek territorial waters within TEPAI scope regardless of flag. Our recommendation is to ask for the boat's documented overall length and relevant payment evidence before handover. Its location at an Athens marina does not make this a marina tariff or prove the charge has been included in a berth invoice. Keep the cruising-fee question separate from the managing body's price and any storage or service proposal.

The FAQ identifies the owner, holder or user as jointly and severally liable for the fee and any applicable fine. Our recommendation is to have the seller explain the boat's payment history and ask the authority how the intended handover and use affect the buyer's position. A promise that the seller will deal with something later should not replace documentary confirmation. This guide does not suggest that a contractual allocation automatically binds the revenue authority or changes the liability described in its official guidance.

AADE requires payment for an entering liable vessel before or at entry, then before the beginning of subsequent months of stay. Our recommendation is to agree who will handle the relevant payment period and retain the actual evidence with the completion file. Ask the marina independently for a current written berth proposal and any owner-change arrangements. No opened official page here proves that a berth transfers with a yacht or that Athens has a standard annual charge. The purchase budget should follow verified obligations and specific written quotations. No local yacht-demand trend, seasonal premium, berth availability, survey delay or standard Dodecanese transaction timetable verified. No current Rhodes tariff or automatic berth transfer verified; obtain the actual managing body's answer. For these, email us at info@europeanyachtbrokers.com for the latest information.

Broker tip: Our recommendation is to request the relevant cruising-fee evidence and obtain a separate written berth proposal. Confirm responsibility for the handover period without assuming a private agreement changes authority liability. Readers often go on to our guide on whether you pay VAT on a boat in Greece.

Section 4

Inspect independently and complete a documented handover

Our recommendation is to select an independent surveyor and agree a written scope suited to the boat and intended use. Discuss access to the hull, machinery, electrical systems and equipment, and ask which checks are outside the proposed inspection. Obtain the seller's permission for any lifting or intrusive work and confirm the yard's arrangements separately. These are practical buyer checks, not a claim that one survey format is legally compulsory for every yacht or that a local service is immediately available.

Our recommendation is to compare the vessel and included equipment with the proposed agreement before accepting the boat. Record identified defects, missing documents and any agreed remedies, and have the consequences of adverse findings written into the sale terms. A favourable test run should not replace documentary ownership checks. Equally, clear ownership paperwork does not prove mechanical condition. Keep both decisions visible so a convenient local berth or an attractive travel arrangement does not distract from unresolved matters that could affect the purchase.

Our recommendation is to agree the handover inventory, keys, document originals, final payment evidence and departure arrangements in writing. Confirm separately with the port whether the buyer can keep the yacht in its current location. The sources here do not establish automatic berth transfer or a national payment-protection arrangement for every yacht sale. Obtain qualified advice on the actual contract and payment structure, and keep the seller's assurances distinct from the authority responses and independent inspection evidence on which you rely.

Broker tip: Our recommendation is to resolve condition findings, document gaps and berth arrangements before final payment. Agree a written inventory and handover plan, and use qualified advice for the actual contract. Our guide on how to register a boat in Greece covers a related point.

Your questions

Frequently asked questions

Can I use the Kos table as a Rhodes marina price?

No such equivalence is established by the official source. The Kos calculator expressly says its figures are indicative and individual port bodies may apply their own tariffs. Our recommendation is to ask the actual Kos or Rhodes managing body for a complete written quote and separately confirm the intended buyer's berthing arrangement before budgeting or completing a purchase. (Municipal Port Fund of Kos)

Does paying a berth charge prove I can keep the purchased boat there?

The opened official sources do not establish automatic berth transfer with a yacht. Our recommendation is to obtain the managing body's written confirmation for the actual buyer, boat and dates, separately from a price calculation. The Kos calculator is expressly indicative and cannot itself establish allocation or a contractual right to occupy a place. (Municipal Port Fund of Kos)

What legal completion point does the stated Greek transfer procedure describe?

For the stated Greek ship-register procedure, Mitos says ownership does not transfer without register entry and requires the seller-and-buyer sale instrument with authenticated signatures. Our recommendation is to establish the yacht's actual flag and register first and agree how the required entry and evidence will be obtained. Do not assume marina location determines the applicable registration route. (Mitos)

Is the cruising fee an additional question for the purchase budget?

AADE describes TEPAI for qualifying private pleasure boats over seven metres overall in Greek territorial waters regardless of flag, and its FAQ addresses payment timing and liability. Our recommendation is to request the relevant evidence and budget it separately from the port's proposal. No reviewed source establishes that a particular berth price includes this fee. (AADE; Municipal Port Fund of Kos)

Should a convenient local berth replace a condition inspection?

Our recommendation is to inspect independently, agree the survey scope and record any defects or missing equipment before acceptance. A marina arrangement and a title procedure answer different questions from the yacht's physical condition. Keep the inspection decision, relevant register entry and the managing body's berth confirmation separate, then use qualified advice for the actual sale and payment terms. (Mitos; Municipal Port Fund of Kos)
