How to Buy a Boat in Athens, Greece in 2027: Checks and Costs

Plan an Athens viewing using municipal marina evidence, then verify the relevant title, fee and customs route.

By Peter Mattey · 9 min read · Facts checked 2026-10-03

This buying a boat Athens guide starts with a practical local question: where is the yacht, and can you inspect it properly? The Municipality of Alimos supplies useful marina information, while Greek official sources explain the relevant title, cruising-fee and customs procedures. The two should be read together without assuming an Athens location proves a boat's legal status. Recommendations are clearly labelled and no regional market trend, berth shortage or standard completion timetable is invented.

Use it to plan a viewing in Athens and the Saronic Gulf and to identify questions for the marina, port authority and customs office. Confirm current requirements with the relevant authority or a qualified adviser. A satisfactory inspection and a convenient berth still need a documented, applicable ownership-transfer and payment plan. Section 1

Plan the viewing around the actual marina

The Municipality of Alimos places Alimos Marina on its coastal waterfront in the Athenian Riviera and describes it as a starting point for the Saronic Gulf and Cyclades. Our recommendation is to confirm the yacht's actual berth before arranging a viewing. A listing described as Athens does not establish that the boat is at this marina, available on the proposed date or accessible without arrangements. Request the berth location and a contact who can admit you to the vessel, then organise travel around that confirmation.

The municipal page describes nine hundred and seventy-nine pleasure-craft berths and says the marina is undergoing a comprehensive upgrade of its port and land infrastructure. Those statements describe the facility; they do not prove that an individual berth is available, included in a sale or transferable to a buyer. Our recommendation is to ask the managing body about current access, the proposed boat's requirements and any works affecting the viewing or handover. Do not infer a completion date or disruption level from the general description.

The municipality publishes VHF channel seventy-one as a marina contact channel. Our recommendation is to obtain current arrival instructions directly before bringing a boat to the site and to distinguish routine marina communication from emergency procedures. When arranging a purchase visit, also ask about access for an independent inspection and any proposed lifting work. These are practical planning questions, not assertions that every service is available for every yacht. The guide does not invent an Athens berth shortage, a typical booking delay or a seasonal price premium.

Broker tip: Our recommendation is to confirm the actual berth, access contact and inspection arrangements before booking travel. Ask the managing body about current works and arrival instructions rather than infer availability from capacity. A related question is answered in our guide on how to buy a boat in Greece.

Section 2

Check the title route before agreeing completion

For vessels within the stated Greek registered-ship and registered-small-vessel transfer procedure, Mitos identifies the port authority's registry department as the receiving service. Our recommendation is to establish the vessel's actual register and flag before deciding which paperwork to request. A yacht moored near Athens is not necessarily registered under that procedure. Ask the seller for the recorded owner and vessel identifiers, then have the relevant authority or a qualified adviser confirm the route that applies to this particular sale and buyer.

The current Mitos procedure requires a seller-and-buyer sale instrument with signatures authenticated by a public authority or through the stated government service. It also makes clear that ownership does not transfer without entry in the ship register for that procedure. Our recommendation is to build the completion plan around the applicable registration step rather than treat payment or delivery alone as sufficient. Confirm who will lodge the documents and what evidence the buyer will receive once the administrative record has been updated.

Our recommendation is to commission an independent condition inspection and agree the permitted scope of any sea trial in writing. Match the boat's identity and equipment to the sale description, and ask how findings will affect the agreement. These are buyer-protection recommendations, not verified universal survey requirements. Keep the condition decision distinct from the title decision: a technically satisfactory inspection is not evidence that the person signing can transfer ownership. Do not release the balance simply because a viewing or trial has gone well.

Broker tip: Our recommendation is to confirm the actual flag and register first, then obtain the authority's document list. Keep condition inspection and legal title checks separate before agreeing the payment sequence. See also our guide on whether you need a boat survey in Greece.

Section 3

Budget the cruising fee separately from a berth

AADE's January 2026 FAQ places qualifying private sailing and motorised pleasure boats over seven metres overall in Greek territorial waters within TEPAI scope regardless of flag. Our recommendation is to ask for the boat's documented overall length and relevant payment evidence before handover. Its location at an Athens marina does not make this a marina tariff or prove the charge has been included in a berth invoice. Keep the cruising-fee question separate from the managing body's price and any storage or service proposal.

The FAQ identifies the owner, holder or user as jointly and severally liable for the fee and any applicable fine. Our recommendation is to have the seller explain the boat's payment history and ask the authority how the intended handover and use affect the buyer's position. A promise that the seller will deal with something later should not replace documentary confirmation. This guide does not suggest that a contractual allocation automatically binds the revenue authority or changes the liability described in its official guidance.

AADE requires payment for an entering liable vessel before or at entry, then before the beginning of subsequent months of stay. Our recommendation is to agree who will handle the relevant payment period and retain the actual evidence with the completion file. Ask the marina independently for a current written berth proposal and any owner-change arrangements. No opened official page here proves that a berth transfers with a yacht or that Athens has a standard annual charge. The purchase budget should follow verified obligations and specific written quotations. No Athens berth availability, local price, survey waiting time, transaction delay, seasonal premium or market-demand claim verified. Municipal upgrade description has no verified completion date; confirm current access directly. For these, email us at info@europeanyachtbrokers.com for the latest information.

Broker tip: Our recommendation is to request the relevant cruising-fee evidence and obtain a separate written berth proposal. Confirm responsibility for the handover period without assuming a private agreement changes authority liability. Readers often go on to our guide on whether you pay VAT on a boat in Greece.

Section 4

Resolve customs status before changing the boat's use

AADE describes a specific temporary-importation route involving the boat's flag, unpaid customs position and the relevant person's habitual residence. Its guidance defines habitual residence using at least one hundred and eighty-five days in a twelve-month period and the person's personal and professional ties. Our recommendation is to ask customs which route applies to the buyer and vessel before relying on an existing temporary status. A boat's presence in an Athens marina is not proof that every resident or visiting purchaser can continue using it on the same basis.

For its stated temporary-importation arrival route, AADE says arrival is declared to the port authority at the first Greek port before the digital Transit Log submission to the issuing customs office. Our recommendation is to ask for the relevant log and supporting customs evidence where that route applies. Do not treat the log as an ownership certificate or a general VAT clearance document. Have the authority explain how a proposed change of owner, user or intended presence must be handled rather than assume the seller's permissions automatically carry over.

Our recommendation is to resolve the title, customs and condition questions before arranging final payment and departure. Obtain written advice where the seller's documents do not explain the vessel's status, and retain the authority's reply alongside the sale agreement and receipts. The sources reviewed do not establish a regional discount, predictable survey delay or standard Athens transaction timetable. A useful local purchase plan identifies the actual marina, secures access, checks the boat independently and completes the relevant national procedures without inventing a local market story.

Broker tip: Our recommendation is to have customs confirm any existing temporary status before an ownership or user change. Agree payment and departure only after the applicable title, customs and condition questions are resolved. Our guide on how to register a boat in Greece covers a related point.

Your questions

Frequently asked questions

Does an Athens listing prove the boat is at Alimos Marina?

No source in this guide establishes the location of an individual advertised yacht. The municipality describes Alimos Marina and its waterfront location, but the actual boat and berth must be confirmed. Our recommendation is to obtain the berth position, access contact and viewing confirmation before booking travel, and ask about any works affecting your visit. (Municipality of Alimos)

Does the published berth capacity mean a space is available?

No. The municipal description gives facility capacity, not a live availability statement or a right that transfers with a yacht. Our recommendation is to ask the managing body for the intended boat's allocation, current written price and owner-change arrangements. Do not infer an Athens shortage or guaranteed place from the capacity figure alone. (Municipality of Alimos)

When does ownership pass under the stated Greek transfer procedure?

Mitos says ownership does not transfer without entry in the ship register for its stated procedure. It also requires the seller-and-buyer sale instrument with authenticated signatures. Our recommendation is to establish the actual flag and register, confirm the applicable route with the authority and agree how registration evidence will be obtained before relying on completion. (Mitos)

Is TEPAI included in a marina berth payment?

No source reviewed establishes that a particular berth invoice includes TEPAI. AADE describes a separate cruising fee for qualifying vessels in Greek territorial waters. Our recommendation is to ask separately for the relevant fee evidence and a written berth proposal, then confirm the handover-period responsibilities without assuming one receipt settles every obligation. (AADE; Municipality of Alimos)

Can a buyer simply continue the seller's temporary customs status?

The reviewed guidance does not establish automatic continuation after an ownership or user change. AADE's route depends on the specified vessel and residence conditions. Our recommendation is to ask customs which procedure applies to the intended purchaser and use, and obtain its answer before relying on an existing Transit Log or making final payment. (AADE)
