IN BRIEF

Which yacht broker do you need at D-Marin Lefkas?

Which broker do you need? If you are selling at D-Marin Lefkas, our seller’s broker helps set the asking price, prepares the listing and advertises it. If you are buying, our buyer’s broker can research the market, help you compare boats, negotiate and coordinate the survey and sea trial. And if you want one broker to look after the whole sale, our full-service broker does so and, where agreed in writing, can represent both parties. Read on for what each involves.

Whether you are listing a yacht or looking for one, you deal with brokers who know the process from the first enquiry to the transfer of funds. Our Athens head office connects you with a local broker for Ionian Islands; the valuation is free, the commission is just 5%, and your yacht reaches buyers on over 20 platforms across Europe. Share your plans and we will say how we can help at D-Marin Lefkas.

Seller's listing broker with a limited service

Selling a yacht kept at D-Marin Lefkas? Our seller’s broker takes the work off you: a free valuation, photographs and particulars, advertising on over 20 international platforms, the enquiries and the viewings. The agreement says what is included, how long it lasts and what commission is payable (just 5%), so there are no surprises.

Bringing a yacht to market is the listing broker’s job, and the owner makes the appointment. The broker may help set the asking price, collect specifications and photographs, prepare the listing, advertise the yacht, respond to enquiries and arrange viewings. Check that the listing agreement explains whether it is exclusive or open, how long it runs, what commission applies and which services are included.

The limited version of the service is simple: the broker advertises the yacht, passes an offer to the owner and does not negotiate or manage the remainder of the transaction. Some sellers want exactly that. It is a defined service, but it is not what every seller’s broker offers. Guidance on selling a yacht commonly covers the stages after an offer as well; Horizon Yachts International describes deposit, survey and sea trial, and YachtWorld says a broker may arrange a survey and sea trial.

Ahead of signing, be clear about where the broker’s work ends. Will the broker negotiate price and conditions, help prepare or explain the paperwork, track deadlines and contingencies, arrange access for a survey or sea trial, and coordinate closing, payment and transfer documents? If any of these are excluded, you may need separate professional help to complete them.

A listing broker represents the seller. Buyers dealing with that broker directly need to ask whom it represents and whether they should have separate representation. Where another broker introduces the buyer, a co-brokerage arrangement may apply and the firms may split commission as agreed. The seller should confirm the effect on the fee and service in their own contract. That is why this profile describes a seller’s listing broker with limited scope rather than yacht brokerage as a whole, including for a boat berthed at D-Marin Lefkas.

Yacht ownership handover with European Yacht Brokers

Buyer's broker representing the purchaser

If you are buying around D-Marin Lefkas, European Yacht Brokers can act as your buyer’s broker. We discuss your plans, size, budget and priorities, research the market, help you compare boats and prepare your offer, and coordinate the survey and sea trial with the seller’s broker. Our brokers speak six languages, so you can deal with us in yours.

Buyers appoint a broker to act for them in finding and buying a yacht. Work begins with the buyer’s plans, preferred type, size, budget, location and priorities. The broker researches the market, identifies possible boats, asks the listing brokers for information, reviews the records that exist and helps the buyer compare options. A number of buyer brokers also preview yachts or arrange remote viewings, which helps the client narrow the field before travelling.

The next stage starts when the buyer settles on a yacht. The broker can help prepare and negotiate an offer, explain the steps and deadlines, and coordinate with the seller’s listing broker through the purchase agreement, deposit and escrow arrangements, independent marine survey, specialist inspections, sea trial and any discussions that follow the inspections. Keeping everyone in communication is part of the job. Assessing the yacht is the surveyor’s job; a broker does not replace an independent technical inspection.

Brokerages describe buyer services that cover research, negotiation, survey coordination, sea-trial arrangements and help with closing documentation. Curtis Stokes & Associates, for instance, describes helping buyers research and preview yachts, prepare offers, negotiate, and find surveyors and documentation support, while HMY describes coordinating the survey and sea-trial stages, discussions after the survey and closing. Services differ, so the buyer should ask what the broker will handle and what stays with the buyer.

Fees differ. The buyer’s broker may receive an agreed share of the commission through a cooperating listing broker, or the buyer may owe a fee under a separate representation agreement, so establish the fee, duration, scope of authority and any exclusivity in writing before the search begins. In return the buyer has a dedicated representative across a wider search, whichever brokerage lists the chosen yacht. Anyone considering a yacht near D-Marin Lefkas should ask these questions before appointing a broker.

Full-service broker representing both parties

Prefer one broker to manage everything? At D-Marin Lefkas our full-service broker handles the sale from assessing the yacht to closing and, if the parties agree in writing, represents both buyer and seller. The arrangement is written down so that each side knows whom the broker acts for.

Full service describes a broker who can look after the whole sale. After the first conversation with the owner the work may include assessing the yacht and asking price, photographs and particulars, advertising, enquiries, viewings and the communication of offers, then helping both parties move an accepted offer through the contract, deposit, survey, sea trial and closing. The broker may also coordinate documentation, escrow, delivery and other details. Set the precise service out in the listing and sale documents.

Dual agency means one broker represents both parties in the same transaction, as the Yacht Brokers Association of America describes it. In this profile the broker deals directly with the buyer and represents buyer and seller alike. It differs from a listing broker who helps a buyer with the sale but remains appointed to represent the seller. Ask the broker to explain the relationship before you make an offer.

Buyer and seller want different things. Generally the seller seeks the strongest price and terms, while the buyer wants a suitable yacht at a fair price and has to make informed decisions about its condition. One broker for both cannot negotiate privately for each side as two independent representatives would. The YBAA discussion stresses transparency about the arrangement and careful handling of confidential information. Because the rules and permitted arrangements vary by jurisdiction, the parties should rely on the written agreement and local advice.

Check who pays what. The commission is often addressed in the seller’s listing agreement, yet arrangements vary and a buyer should find out whether a separate fee is owed. Full-service is about how much work the broker does; dual agency is about whom the broker represents. Extensive support through a transaction does not mean the broker represents both sides.

How European Yacht Brokers operates in Greece and at D-Marin Lefkas

From our Athens head office we manage a network of brokers serving Greece’s coastal regions and many of its marinas. The first conversation is with the Athens team, who connect you with the broker for your area, and that broker can reach any Greek marina within the hour, thanks to the network, to visit your boat and give a no-cost valuation.

Clients at D-Marin Lefkas in Lefkada, Ionian Islands, are served by the broker for that area. Our delegates and agents look after all the coastal regions of Greece: Attica, Central Greece, Central Macedonia, Crete, Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, Epirus, the Ionian Islands, the North Aegean, the Peloponnese, the South Aegean, Thessaly and Western Greece. They can speak with customers and visit their boats at short notice, while the Athens head office coordinates the work.

Start a valuation by downloading our Sales Mandate and Evaluation Sheet. From the boat’s details and condition we can study the market and produce a precise, evidence-based valuation, drawing on the sales data we hold for boats worldwide over the past three years. Remember that a valuation assesses likely market value; it does not guarantee the eventual sale price.

Once you appoint us, your regional broker manages the work of finding a buyer or helping you find the right boat, and guides you through the transaction to completion and the successful transfer of funds. We advertise boats across over 20 platforms throughout Europe, giving them visibility beyond the Greek market, and reaching international buyers can often help secure a stronger price than relying on local demand alone. Our brokers speak six languages between them, so we can connect you with someone who speaks yours.

Frequently asked questions about yacht brokers

Is the appointment exclusive?

The listing agreement should say whether it is exclusive or open, how long it lasts and what commission is payable. Exclusivity is not always required, and we decide it case by case.

Can a buyer’s broker replace the marine survey?

No. The surveyor assesses the yacht and the broker does not replace an independent technical inspection, but the broker can help line up the survey and sea trial.

Can one broker act for both the buyer and the seller?

Yes, this is called dual agency: one broker represents both parties in the same transaction. Any buyer should have the relationship explained before making an offer. The rules vary by jurisdiction.

How quickly can a broker reach D-Marin Lefkas?

Our brokers around Greece let us arrange for a broker to reach any Greek marina in less than an hour, coordinated from the Athens head office.

Can I end the mandate?

You may end the contract whenever you wish. If a buyer we introduced during the mandate buys the boat later, we are still entitled to our commission.
