How to Buy a Boat in the Balearics, Spain in 2027: Checks and Costs

Check island berthing, ownership documents and protected mooring rules before committing to a yacht in the Balearic Islands.

By Peter Mattey · 9 min read · Facts checked 2026-10-03

Buying a boat Balearics should start with the way you intend to use and keep the yacht after completion. A viewing in Palma, Ibiza or Menorca is only part of that decision: the boat's paperwork, your skipper permissions and a confirmed berth all need checking. Local mooring protections also affect where you can stop. This guide connects those verified island-specific issues with national registration requirements without inventing market premiums, typical discounts or guaranteed berth availability.

The guide covers document review, public berth-booking examples and the official rules protecting Posidonia. It distinguishes a closed historical seasonal application from current availability and keeps practical recommendations separate from legal requirements. For the actual transaction, ask the relevant port, maritime authority and a locally qualified adviser to confirm the yacht's circumstances. Section 1

Choose a boat for the islands and its confirmed berth

The right starting point is a realistic use plan for Palma, Ibiza or Menorca, followed by a confirmed place to keep the yacht. The national registration decree's recreational boat definition covers hull lengths from 2.5 to 24 metres. Its special Spanish inscription route for CE-marked boats up to 12 metres differs from full flag registration and comes with navigation limits. As a practical recommendation, ask the maritime authority which route fits the boat and intended cruising before treating its present documents as suitable for your future use.

Your own skipper permission also matters. PER's basic motor permissions include vessels up to 15 metres and navigation between islands within the Balearic archipelago, while sailing and extended permissions are addressed separately. As practical advice, show the authority your actual qualification and planned first passage before arranging delivery. A boat advertised as suitable for island cruising does not establish what its buyer is personally permitted to operate, and inter-island permission should not be confused with a separately endorsed passage from the Iberian Peninsula.

Local mooring restrictions should influence the use plan before purchase. The Balearic Government's current guidance points navigators to the official viewer for regulated mooring-field boundaries and the latest available Posidonia mapping. As a practical recommendation, review the waters where you intend to stop and check the relevant operator's boat limits and booking terms. Treat that as part of matching the yacht to the proposed use, rather than assuming every sheltered bay offers an unrestricted alternative if your preferred port cannot confirm a berth.

Broker tip: Practical recommendation: check the intended island route and berth with the relevant authorities before committing. Give them the yacht's actual dimensions and documents, and verify your skipper permissions separately from the boat's operating limitations. Section 2

Review the ownership and registration file before completion

Ask for the yacht's existing registration or inscription records and the evidence showing how the seller acquired it. The registration decree defines an ownership transfer as a documented change in ownership established by a legally valid means. As practical advice, have a locally qualified adviser compare the seller's identity, the boat identification and the proposed transfer document before completion. This guide does not treat a regional location, a broker's description or the possession of keys as a substitute for reviewing the actual ownership file.

If Spanish CE flag registration is part of the plan, the decree lists acquisition or right-of-use evidence and boat and propulsion-engine conformity declarations where applicable. For vessels from third countries it also lists customs clearance where applicable. As a practical recommendation, obtain copies early and ask the receiving maritime authority to identify any missing record. A viewing can establish what is physically aboard, but it does not resolve a missing declaration or determine the customs status of a yacht simply because it is already lying in the islands.

An imported boat previously registered in another country may need evidence of deregistration from that register, or the prescribed responsible declaration where registration is unnecessary there. Keep that issue separate from the buyer's decision about where to keep the yacht. As practical advice, agree who will obtain the record and what completion depends on, then have the adviser check the actual transaction terms. Do not promise immediate island cruising if the documents needed for the chosen registration route have not been established and the authority has not confirmed what remains outstanding.

Broker tip: Practical recommendation: have the adviser and maritime authority review document copies before the purchase becomes unconditional. Agree who supplies each outstanding record and keep customs, ownership and registration questions visible as separate checks in the sale file. Section 3

Price the berth and check the actual booking route

Ports IB's public transit terms give a useful local example of why a berth budget needs the exact boat and dates. Confirmation comes after payment of the amount shown in the booking process, and paying berth rights does not confer entitlement to additional services. As practical advice, request an itemised current total from the chosen operator, including the services you need for survey or collection. This guide does not invent island price premiums or give a current euro rate from a tariff sheet labelled for an earlier year.

Public seasonal arrangements are separate from a short online transit booking. Ports IB's summer 2026 page publishes application and allocation stages for its seasonal installations. For the Porto Cristo offer it listed 37 berths across size categories, including categories showing no places. That was a specific historical offer, not evidence that a berth is available today or that all island marinas have the same conditions. As a practical recommendation, ask the operator to confirm the current route for your yacht rather than relying on a published seasonal list.

The Porto Cristo seasonal application window ran from 4 May 2026 to 15 May 2026 and has already closed at this guide's checking date. The page also states that electronic identification was required for that application route. As practical advice, distinguish a future application opportunity from the closed historical procedure before committing to travel or purchase. Ask about the actual availability for the vessel's length, beam and intended arrival, and keep the response. No next-season timetable or customary waiting period is established by the research presented here. No regional transaction-price premium, typical discount, market-demand statistic or survey-cost average was verified on an official page. No current marina waiting duration, actual registration-processing delay or live berth availability was established; obtain operator and authority confirmation for the vessel. For these, email us at info@europeanyachtbrokers.com for the latest information.

Broker tip: Practical recommendation: get a current written berth confirmation for the actual yacht before making the purchase depend on staying there. Separate the short transit booking from any seasonal or base-berth application and request an itemised payable total. See also our guide on whether you pay VAT on a boat in Spain.

Section 4

Plan trials and cruising around protected moorings

The Balearic Government's current explanation of the Posidonia decree states the general prohibition on anchoring over Posidonia oceanica. It distinguishes authorised low-impact systems, such as approved individual buoys or buoy fields, from uncontrolled anchoring. As a practical recommendation, agree a sea-trial route with a competent skipper and check the intended stopping place before departure. Do not infer that a visible mooring buoy is available to your yacht or that a shallow patch is permitted merely because other boats appear to be using it.

Protected-area plans can impose more protective provisions, which the government guidance explains take priority in those areas. It specifically says that in the named regulated fields at Cala Blava, Sa Dragonera/Sant Elm and Cala Fornells, skippers must use the provided buoys and may not drop an anchor on the seabed. As practical advice, ask the field operator about the yacht's suitability and availability, and check the relevant local plan. Treat the actual location and its rules as part of the navigation decision rather than applying a broad island-wide assumption.

The berth conditions also need checking before a trial or handover. Ports IB's linked terms require a policy meeting compulsory liability requirements and including sinking and wreck removal cover, and do not allow a reservation to be switched to another boat. As a practical recommendation, confirm the booked vessel and proposed ownership change with the operator, and ask the insurer about the trial and collection arrangements. Environmental permission, boat-specific berth acceptance and insurance evidence are separate practical checks; completing one does not answer the others.

Broker tip: Practical recommendation: agree the trial route and stopping place with a competent skipper, check the relevant mooring operator and protected-area rules, and confirm the insurance and booked-vessel details before arranging the buyer's first passage. Your questions

Frequently asked questions

Does a yacht purchase guarantee a berth in the Balearics?

No berth guarantee is established by the researched material: Ports IB's seasonal offer was a specific historical allocation process, and its transit booking needs confirmation and payment for the actual boat. As practical advice, obtain current written acceptance from the chosen operator before making the purchase depend on staying there. Do not treat a closed seasonal list or the seller's present location as a confirmed berth for the buyer. (Ports IB, summer 2026 seasonal transit procedure; Ports IB, online transit berth conditions)

Can I anchor over Posidonia during a sea trial?

The official guidance states the general prohibition on anchoring over Posidonia and distinguishes duly authorised low-impact systems. Protected-area plans can impose more protective provisions. As a practical recommendation, agree the trial route and stopping place beforehand, check the official mapping and ask the relevant field operator about the intended yacht. The presence of another boat or a visible buoy is not confirmation of an available authorised arrangement. (Balearic Government, regulated mooring guidance)

Does PER cover navigation between the Balearic islands?

PER's basic motor permissions include boats up to 15 metres and navigation between islands within the Balearic archipelago. Sailing and extended-route permissions are separate provisions. As a practical recommendation, ask the authority to confirm the endorsements on your actual qualification and distinguish island-to-island cruising from a passage between the Iberian Peninsula and the islands before planning delivery or taking the buyer's first trip. (BOE, recreational skipper qualifications)

What documents should I check for an imported yacht?

For the relevant Spanish CE flag-registration route, the decree lists acquisition/right-of-use evidence, boat and engine conformity declarations and, where applicable, customs clearance. Imported boats previously registered abroad also need the specified deregistration evidence or responsible declaration. As practical advice, have the adviser and maritime authority review copies before an unconditional purchase and agree who supplies each missing record. (BOE, recreational boat registration regulation)

Is the published Porto Cristo summer procedure still open?

No: its published summer 2026 application window ran from 4 May to 15 May 2026, so it has closed at this guide's checking date. That historical procedure is not a next-season timetable or a statement of live berth availability. As practical advice, ask Ports IB which current booking or application route applies to the actual yacht and dates before arranging purchase-related travel. (Ports IB, summer 2026 seasonal transit procedure)
