How to Buy a Boat in Costa Blanca, Spain in 2027: Checks and Costs

Check the sale and berth separately, understand local public-berth rules and plan the yacht's use around Tabarca's protected waters.

By Peter Mattey · 9 min read · Facts checked 2026-10-03

Buying a boat Costa Blanca questions extend beyond the yacht's condition and asking price. If you intend to keep it locally, establish what berth arrangement you would actually receive and whether that arrangement changes when ownership changes. Official rules for directly managed public berths provide specific answers, but they do not describe every private marina. Assess the sale and berthing separately, then plan the yacht's intended cruising and use with the relevant authority.

This guide covers the Spanish maritime-sale framework, the Generalitat Valenciana's public-berth procedure and verified information about Tabarca's marine reserve. It does not claim local availability, price premiums or standard paperwork delays. Practical checks are recommendations. A locally qualified adviser should assess the actual sale and the operator should confirm the intended berth arrangements. Does buying the boat give you its present berth?

Start by asking who manages the berth and what document governs its use. The Generalitat Valenciana's procedure concerns public berths in directly managed ports. It is not a rule for every marina along the Costa Blanca. As a practical recommendation, obtain the actual operator's written explanation before including a berth in your purchase assumptions. Ask whether you need a new application, a contract or other consent after buying the boat. Do not treat the seller's current mooring as automatically part of the yacht sale.

The public procedure restricts allocation to a single natural person owning a qualifying recreational boat. The craft must also fit the berth's stated technical conditions. If you intend a company purchase, shared ownership or commercial use, ask the authority which arrangement applies rather than assuming that procedure fits. This guide does not prescribe an alternative route without evidence. Give the operator accurate boat dimensions and intended use so the berthing answer concerns the yacht you are actually considering.

Availability is addressed through the procedure's vacancy and waiting-list arrangements. That is not evidence of a particular waiting time, nor a statement that every local port is full. The guidance also identifies a change in boat ownership as a reason for ending a base-berth allocation. As a recommendation, resolve the future berth position before finalising the purchase budget and delivery plan. Ask the authority to assess your own application rather than relying on what the seller was previously permitted to do.

Broker tip: As a practical purchase check, obtain the operator's written answer on your own future berth before relying on the seller's mooring. Confirm the ownership structure and intended use, particularly if buying through a company. Readers often go on to our guide on how to buy a boat in Spain.

How should the local viewing and purchase documents be organised?

Arrange the viewing and any purchase inspection around access that has actually been agreed. As a practical recommendation, ask the seller and provider who authorises lifting, equipment testing or a trial and what information must be available. Those are recommended purchase-planning questions, not a compulsory local inspection package. This guide does not assert that Costa Blanca sales use one universal survey condition. A locally qualified lawyer should assess the wording that determines what follows from an inspection finding.

The Maritime Navigation Act supplies a national sale framework, with extension to craft where their nature permits. Its provisions address a written contract and detailed inventory. As a recommendation, compare the inventory with the equipment and documents presented during the viewing, then resolve discrepancies before signing. Keep any berth arrangement distinct from the yacht inventory unless the actual operator and legal documents establish what can be transferred. A berth shown in a listing is not proof that you have acquired a separate right.

Plan delivery and third-party registration with the adviser, rather than treating every step as the same event. The maritime legislation distinguishes ownership by delivery from formalities for effect against third parties. It does not make the yacht's location at a particular marina the whole legal answer. As a recommendation, agree who supplies the documents and what evidence records handover. This guide does not establish a universal notary appointment, sale duration or foreign-flag transfer process for every boat viewed on this coast.

Broker tip: As a practical viewing follow-up, compare the proposed inventory with what you inspected and keep the berth question separate. Ask the adviser to explain signing, delivery and third-party registration before agreeing completion. Our guide on whether you need a boat survey in Spain covers a related point.

Which berthing costs and timetable claims can you verify?

Obtain the actual current quotation for the berth you intend to use. The public procedure describes its charging arrangements but does not provide a universal marina budget for this coast. As a practical recommendation, ask for the permitted stay, boat dimensions, services and payer to be shown clearly. Keep privately quoted services distinct from public charges. This guide does not turn a rate from one operator or a historic tariff sheet into a current price for every Costa Blanca yacht owner.

The directly managed public procedure states advance charging for the authorised periods, with calendar-half-year arrangements for base craft. Ask the authority to calculate the actual amount for your boat and application. Do not assume a boat-sale agreement itself gives a right to the base rate. The guidance also states that using a berth without allocation does not remove the charge or confer base or visitor status. Payment and entitlement therefore need their own assessment before you plan to leave the yacht there.

The procedure states a maximum decision period for applications, but that does not prove that a suitable berth is vacant or establish an actual waiting-list delay. Ask the authority for the position relevant to the boat and intended dates. As a practical recommendation, keep a workable delivery alternative while the berth question is unresolved. No verified local survey price, sale-price premium or complete purchase-cost total was established here, so the guide supplies neither invented market figures nor an assumed national completion timetable. No official evidence of current berth availability, seasonal pressure, local sale-price premiums or routine paperwork delays was verified. The public berth rules apply only to the specified directly managed procedure, not all regional marinas. For these, email us at info@europeanyachtbrokers.com for the latest information.

Broker tip: Ask for a current written berth quotation and an answer on actual availability for your boat. As a practical planning step, keep the application decision period separate from any unverified waiting-list delay. What local cruising checks matter near Tabarca?

Consider how the yacht will be used after purchase, including visits to protected waters. The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food describes Tabarca's reserve off the Alicante coast facing Santa Pola, with administration divided between interior and exterior waters. Ask the relevant authority which area your intended activity concerns. This guide does not generalise every reserve provision to the whole Costa Blanca or invent an unrestricted anchoring permission based on the yacht being privately owned.

The official reserve page describes designated mooring facilities and prior authorisation for scuba diving. Boats undertaking authorised diving must use the specified buoy. As a practical recommendation, establish the activity and intended location before promising a local trial or excursion that depends on protected-water access. The guide does not assert that buying a boat automatically transfers an activity permission, nor that one authorisation covers all waters or activities. Ask the relevant authority to confirm the actual arrangement before the trip.

Keep those local-use checks separate from the purchase contract and marina allocation. As a recommendation, ask the technical provider to plan an appropriate trial route and preserve any authority information needed for the intended use. No seasonal berth pressure, current local availability or routine administration delay was verified from the official pages opened. Where those details affect your decision, obtain a direct current answer from the operator or authority instead of accepting a broad claim about the local boating market.

Broker tip: As a practical cruising check, ask the relevant authority about the actual activity and area near Tabarca before planning the route. Keep the reserve permission question distinct from marina berthing and ownership of the yacht. See also our guide on how to register a boat in Spain.

Your questions

Frequently asked questions

Does the boat's current public berth automatically pass to me?

The directly managed public-berth procedure lists ownership change as a reason for ending a base allocation. Ask the authority about your own future arrangement before relying on the seller's mooring. That rule is scoped to the public procedure used here, not every private marina. As a practical recommendation, keep the berth confirmation separate from the yacht inventory and purchase agreement. (Generalitat Valenciana – public berth allocation)

Can a company use the public allocation procedure described here?

The procedure states allocation to a single natural person and excludes a legal entity or multiple natural persons as holder. Ask the authority which actual arrangement applies if your intended purchase structure differs. This guide does not invent an alternative route. Give the operator the ownership, boat dimensions and intended use before relying on a berth shown in the seller's listing. (Generalitat Valenciana – public berth allocation)

Does an application decision period guarantee a berth?

No berth availability is guaranteed by that provision. The procedure separately addresses allocation according to vacancies and waiting lists for base applications where places are unavailable. Ask the authority for the current position for your craft and dates. As a practical recommendation, keep an alternative delivery plan while unresolved. No actual local waiting-list duration or seasonal pressure statistic was verified in this guide. (Generalitat Valenciana – public berth allocation)

Should equipment included in the sale be written down?

The Maritime Navigation Act requires a detailed inventory under its sale provisions, extending to craft where their nature permits. As a practical recommendation, compare the agreed inventory with the viewing and resolve exclusions before signing. Keep any berth right separate unless its transfer is established by the actual operator and documents. Ask a locally qualified adviser to confirm the application to your sale. (BOE – Maritime Navigation Act)

Can I assume scuba diving near Tabarca needs no permission?

No; the official reserve page states prior authorisation for scuba diving and requires the boat to use the designated buoy. The competent body depends on the relevant waters. Ask the authority to confirm the activity and area before planning a trip. This guide does not assert that yacht ownership or a marina berth supplies the separate reserve authorisation. (MAPA – Tabarca marine reserve)
