What Boat Insurance Do You Need in Turkey? 2027

Read the official hull-policy conditions, request the required information and check protection for the actual boat and planned use.

By Peter Mattey · 9 min read · Facts checked 2026-10-03

Boat insurance Turkey decisions should start with the proposed yacht, owner and activities, rather than a premium estimate copied from another boat. The Turkish insurance regulator publishes hull-policy general conditions and a separate circular explaining the information insurers must supply. These sources help buyers ask precise questions about cover, exclusions, value and claims. This guide distinguishes their published provisions from practical recommendations and does not invent a universal premium or mandatory liability limit.

The guide is for private buyers and sellers coordinating inspection, completion and continued ownership. It explains the regulator's published insurance documents and how to compare them with the actual proposed policy. The insurer should confirm vessel-specific cover and any survey conditions; marina or authority requirements need their own confirmation. Section 1

Request written cover information before accepting a quote

SEDDK is the Insurance and Private Pension Regulation and Supervision Agency. Its insurance-information circular requires a pre-contract information text, with time for the prospective policyholder to examine it. That text covers the insurance's scope, operation and compensation rules. As practical advice, obtain it before accepting the quotation and compare it with the proposed policy. An informal premium message or a conversation with the seller does not supply the whole documentary basis needed to understand this yacht's protection.

The circular requires the text to identify insured risks, cover amounts, deductibles where relevant, premium and payment conditions, claims information and applicable renewal terms. It also addresses special clauses and their application. As practical advice, ask the provider to point to the wording governing the actual boat, intended waters, proposed skipper and use. Do not assume these matters have identical treatment in every policy. This guide does not publish a sample exclusion as if it were a Turkish rule for all pleasure yachts.

The regulator distinguishes written information from oral explanations. For face-to-face contracts, an oral explanation alone is insufficient; the circular also provides for information through the stated durable-medium route. As practical advice, retain an accessible copy of the documents and resolve conflicting explanations before the policy starts. The circular says the policy wording prevails if it differs from the information text. Read the issued policy itself, and obtain clarification where it does not appear to match what was proposed.

Broker tip: Get the information text and proposed policy before accepting the quote. Ask written questions about the actual yacht and use, and compare the issued policy with the protection you agreed. Our guide on whether you need a boat survey in Turkey covers a related point.

Section 2

Separate hull damage, liability and special conditions

The regulator's Hull Insurance General Conditions describe insurance against risks affecting the stated vessel or other insurable interests during the policy period, subject to the policy conditions. The scope includes pleasure craft and yachts where the insurer accepts them. As practical advice, check that the insurer has accepted this yacht and that its identity is correct in the contract. The presence of a yacht in the general document's list does not establish that every applicant, hull material or vessel condition is accepted automatically.

The general conditions distinguish loss or damage from liability compensation, which is included if it forms part of the cover. They state that the attached special conditions define the risks, exclusions and content of the protection and expenses. As practical advice, ask which liability cover is actually included and request its wording. Hull insurance should not be treated as evidence of every liability protection that a marina or other authority asks for, nor as a guarantee against every consequence of a survey trial or delivery.

The same document discusses class certificates and a route for unclassed vessels built in accordance with the applicable legislation. This is an insurance-conditions provision, not a claim that every private yacht must obtain classification or that an independent purchase survey is universally compulsory. As practical advice, ask the insurer what technical evidence it requires for this boat and disclose relevant condition findings. Keep any insurer-requested survey requirement distinct from a buyer's voluntary inspection and the authority's own technical administration.

Broker tip: Ask the insurer to identify the exact hull and liability wording and any technical evidence it needs. Confirm cover for the trial, lift and delivery rather than relying on the seller's existing policy. A related question is answered in our guide on what safety equipment a boat must carry in Turkey.

Section 3

Agree the insured value and disclose relevant information

The published hull conditions use the vessel's value when the risk starts unless another basis is agreed. They also distinguish items excluded from that default value, such as the stated consumables and operating costs. As practical advice, discuss the valuation basis explicitly and check the insured sum against it. The purchase price and the insured value are not automatically demonstrated to be interchangeable. This guide gives no invented valuation table, premium percentage or market estimate for a Turkish yacht.

The general conditions address both insurance above value and insurance below value. They say the excess above insurance value is invalid and describe proportional compensation where the insured amount is below value. As practical advice, ask the provider to explain how the chosen sum would affect an actual claim under the proposed policy. Do not lower the figure simply to obtain a cheaper quotation without discussing the resulting treatment. Keep the insurer's explanation with the agreed valuation basis and any supporting inspection report.

The general conditions also require good faith and disclosure of known matters material to the insurance contract. Materiality includes matters capable of influencing a prudent insurer's decision or terms. As practical advice, tell the provider about the intended owner and use and disclose the relevant condition findings before cover is agreed. An incomplete sales description should not become the insurer's only account of the yacht. Confirm who pays the premium and when, using the actual policy rather than an assumed automatic transfer from the seller. No universal compulsory private-yacht liability rule or current minimum insurance amounts verified; confirm the actual vessel and activity with the authority. No premium rate, insured-value table or automatic sale-transfer of policy verified. For these, email us at info@europeanyachtbrokers.com for the latest information.

Broker tip: Agree the value basis with the insurer and ask how underinsurance would affect a claim. Provide relevant condition and use information before acceptance, and retain the provider's written answers with the policy. See also our guide on how much a berth costs in Turkey.

Section 4

Prepare claims evidence and use the regulator's contact routes

The hull general conditions require notification when the insured learns that the risk has occurred. They also describe cooperation, protective measures and preservation of rights against responsible third parties. As practical advice, keep the insurer's current claim contact and instructions accessible aboard and ashore. After an incident, record what happened and ask the provider which immediate steps belong to the actual policy. Do not assume a broker or marina report alone replaces the insured's own notification and evidence obligations.

The document lists supporting claim evidence, including a sea report, relevant log extracts, technical certificates, an expert or adjustment report and invoices or receipts. The applicable evidence should be discussed for the actual craft and event; this guide does not say every small yacht must hold every commercial-vessel document in that list. As practical advice, preserve the records available and obtain the insurer's checklist before discarding damaged equipment or authorising work that could remove evidence needed to assess the claim.

SEDDK's contact page provides an official e-Government route for complaints and reports, and a separate information-request route through CİMER, the Presidency's communication service. These published channels do not amount to a promise that every insurance dispute will be resolved in the policyholder's favour. As practical advice, retain the policy, information text, correspondence and insurer's decision when seeking assistance. Ask for a clear written explanation of a disputed response, and obtain locally qualified advice where contractual rights or remedies need interpretation.

Broker tip: Keep claim instructions and policy documents accessible. Preserve incident evidence and written insurer responses, then use the published regulator route where assistance is needed without assuming that a complaint guarantees compensation. Your questions

Frequently asked questions

Does hull insurance automatically include liability cover?

The published general conditions include liability compensation only if it forms part of the cover, and special conditions define the protection. Read the actual policy rather than assuming every hull contract includes the liability protection needed for the proposed activity or berth. As practical advice, request the relevant wording and confirmation for the yacht, owner, skipper and intended use before accepting a quotation. (SEDDK)

Must the insurer give me written information?

The regulator's circular requires pre-contract information and says face-to-face information cannot be oral only. It also describes the permitted durable-medium route. As practical advice, obtain an accessible copy of the information text and proposed policy and review them before acceptance. Keep any written answers about this yacht's cover, and read the issued policy itself where an explanation appears inconsistent with the contract. (SEDDK)

Is the yacht's purchase price automatically the insured value?

The published hull conditions use value at the start of risk unless another basis is agreed, and they distinguish the insured sum from insurance value. As practical advice, discuss the basis with the provider and obtain a written explanation of how the proposed figure affects a claim. This guide supplies no market valuation or premium table and does not assume that a purchase invoice alone settles insurance value. (SEDDK)

Is an independent purchase survey compulsory for every policy?

No universal requirement is verified here. The hull conditions address class and construction evidence, while a provider's survey condition needs confirmation in the actual offer. As practical advice, ask which technical evidence this insurer requires for this yacht and keep that request separate from the buyer's voluntary purchase inspection. Do not treat a class condition or another boat's policy as a universal purchase-survey rule. (SEDDK)

Where can I raise an insurance complaint?

SEDDK's official contact page gives its electronic e-Government route for complaints and reports and a separate CİMER information-request route. As practical advice, retain the policy, information text, correspondence and insurer's written decision before seeking help. The existence of a regulator channel is not a promise of compensation or a substitute for identifying the actual disputed policy condition and the remedy sought. (SEDDK)
