How Much Is Your Boat Worth in Italy? 2027 Guide

Understand comparison evidence, condition checks and how to instruct an assessor without relying on invented depreciation tables.

By Peter Mattey · 9 min read · Facts checked 2026-10-03

Boat valuation Italy should help you make a decision you can explain: what to ask, what to offer or what further evidence to obtain. This guide gives practical recommendations for comparing boats and instructing an assessor, alongside verified official information about expert registers and condition-related sale rules. It does not present those rules as a government valuation formula. No market price, depreciation rate or regional premium is invented to fill an evidence gap.

The guide is for buyers and sellers who want a reasoned assessment rather than a headline figure. It explains what to include in the instruction, how to separate advertised prices from supported transactions and how to keep condition, specification and unresolved paperwork visible when discussing a price. For anything this guide does not cover, email us at info@europeanyachtbrokers.com for the latest information.

Section 1

Define what you want the valuation to tell you

Our recommendation is to start by naming the purpose of the assessment. A proposed asking price, an offer you would accept and a value requested by a lender or insurer should not be treated as interchangeable instructions. Tell the person preparing the report what decision you need to make, who will use it and what boat is included. Ask them to state the valuation date, the assumptions and the limitations in writing, so another reader can understand what the conclusion actually represents.

For a sale discussion, our recommendation is to assemble comparison evidence with the source and date recorded. Separate advertised asking prices from prices supported by evidence of completed transactions. Compare the actual specification, condition and included equipment rather than a model name alone. An advertised figure is an invitation from that seller; do not enter it in your working notes as a confirmed selling price. Where transaction evidence cannot be obtained, identify that limitation instead of presenting an unsupported discount as a market rule.

Our recommendation is to ask for a reasoned conclusion rather than an unexplained number. The assessor should be able to identify which evidence they accepted, what differences matter and what remains uncertain about the boat. Do not apply a depreciation percentage taken from memory or assume that every improvement adds its invoice amount to resale value. No official Italian leisure-boat price table, universal annual depreciation rate or fixed relationship between asking and selling prices was verified for this guide.

Broker tip: Our recommendation is to write the purpose and intended user of the valuation at the top of your instruction, then ask the assessor to confirm both before quoting for the work. Our guide on how to prepare a boat for sale in Italy covers a related point.

What the valuation is for

Section 2

Choose an assessor and agree a useful report

A Chamber of Commerce expert register can help you check a claimed entry, but its meaning needs to be understood. The Genoa Chamber explains that the register of experts and specialists, Ruolo dei periti e degli esperti, is arranged by categories and subcategories. It also explains that entry is not compulsory and does not authorise the activity. Our recommendation is to verify the relevant category and then ask separately about experience with the particular type of boat and the proposed valuation purpose.

The Chamber describes the register as a public information tool for users, rather than a substitute for every enquiry a client should make. Our recommendation is to ask who will inspect the boat, who will sign the report and which investigations are included. Describe the boat's location and accessibility when requesting the quotation. Ask whether testing, lifting or specialist assistance must be arranged separately. Those are instructions for a private assignment; the register does not establish the scope or price of your particular valuation.

For evidence of capability, our recommendation is to request examples of relevant work and an explanation of the intended method without demanding another customer's confidential information. The Chamber's application process requires a curriculum vitae and supporting evidence of suitability in the requested categories. That provides useful context for checking a register claim. It does not prove that every registered person covers every type of yacht, or that an unregistered person is automatically prohibited from undertaking a private assessment.

Broker tip: Our recommendation is to ask the assessor to identify the relevant register category, their inspection scope and the report's limitations in the quotation, rather than relying on a job title alone. A related question is answered in our guide on what it costs to sell a boat in Italy.

Section 3

Assess condition without inventing a repair discount

Our recommendation is to prepare a condition file before discussing adjustments to the price. Include service records, earlier inspection reports, repair documentation and a list of equipment that is included. Separate a fault that has been diagnosed from an observation that still needs investigation. Ask for written repair quotations where appropriate, and distinguish the cost of a proposed remedy from the effect on your agreed purchase terms. This guide supplies no percentage reduction for engine hours, age, damage history or overdue maintenance.

The Italian Civil Code, Codice civile, treats defects that make an item unfit for its intended use or appreciably reduce its value as part of the seller's defect warranty. It also addresses bad-faith concealment. Those provisions explain why condition evidence belongs in a price discussion, but they are not a formula for calculating a yacht's market value. Our recommendation is to retain the inspection evidence and describe the agreed condition clearly instead of assuming an attractive headline price settles the matter.

For cases governed by the Civil Code defect warranty, the buyer can seek remedies that include a price reduction or termination, subject to the stated conditions. Our recommendation is to involve a locally qualified lawyer when there is a dispute about a completed sale. Before completion, keep a negotiated adjustment, a contractual repair obligation and a legal remedy distinct in your notes. A valuation report should identify relevant physical evidence; it should not promise that the report itself automatically creates a right to compensation. Official price tables, depreciation scales, regional premiums, valuation fees and turnaround times are not covered here: email us at info@europeanyachtbrokers.com for the latest information.

Broker tip: Our recommendation is to give the assessor the repair evidence and ask which conclusions rely on inspection, which rely on documents and which still require a specialist diagnosis. See also our guide on how much yacht broker commission is in Italy.

Section 4

Document the specification and explain the remaining uncertainty

Our recommendation is to match the report to the actual boat and equipment being valued. Identify the hull, engines and inventory; mark equipment that will be removed before delivery. The Codice della nautica da diporto, Legislative Decree 171/2005, distinguishes ownership and technical documents in the Italian registration file. Use that distinction when assembling evidence for the assessor. A registration requirement is not a valuation standard, but the documents can help you establish which boat and technical configuration the report is discussing.

For a boat that has come from another country or lacks CE marking, our recommendation is to identify that history clearly at the outset. The navigation code provides different documentary routes for particular histories. Ask the appropriate registration desk and a locally qualified adviser about unresolved documentation. Do not insert an assumed compliance cost into the valuation or describe the absence of a document as a proven defect without checking the actual case. Record what was supplied, what was checked and what remains unresolved.

Our recommendation is to make location, delivery arrangements and your intended berth explicit assumptions in the instruction. If the buyer needs the boat moved, obtain a quotation rather than inventing a regional adjustment. If the seller expects equipment or a berth arrangement to support the asking price, document exactly what is being offered. No verified Italian regional price premium, marina-availability adjustment or seasonal valuation percentage is included here. Finish the report with the evidence and assumptions that another reader needs to assess its limits.

Broker tip: Our recommendation is to ask for the final report to identify the included equipment and unresolved documents, so you do not negotiate from a figure based on a different inventory. Your questions

Frequently asked questions

Is there an official Italian depreciation table for leisure boats?

No official depreciation table was verified for this guide. Our recommendation is to ask for a report that identifies its purpose, date, evidence, assumptions and limitations rather than applying a percentage from memory. The Genoa Chamber's expert-register information explains a way to check a claimed entry, but it does not provide a universal leisure-boat valuation formula. (Camera di Commercio di Genova)

Does a Chamber of Commerce register entry prove a valuation licence?

No: the Genoa Chamber states that entry is not compulsory and does not authorise the activity. Its purpose is public information for users. Our recommendation is to check the relevant category and then enquire separately about the assessor's experience, intended inspection and report scope. A register entry should not be treated as proof that every type of yacht or valuation purpose is covered. (Camera di Commercio di Genova)

Can a fault affect a boat price?

The Civil Code expressly covers defects that appreciably diminish an item's value, as well as defects that make it unfit for its intended use. Our recommendation is to document the actual condition and obtain appropriate repair evidence before negotiating. Those provisions are part of the seller's defect warranty; they do not supply a percentage discount or a market valuation formula. (Normattiva)

Does an advertised asking price prove a selling price?

The official sources used here do not establish that equivalence. Our recommendation is to separate advertised asking figures from prices supported by completed-transaction evidence and state where transaction evidence is unavailable. The practical comparison method in this guide is a recommendation, not a prescribed official standard. It should be used alongside a clear assessment of the boat's condition and specification. (Normattiva)

What paperwork helps identify the boat being assessed?

Ownership and technical documents help establish which boat and configuration the report concerns. Article 19 of the Codice della nautica da diporto distinguishes ownership evidence, conformity documentation and engine power declarations in the registration file. Our recommendation is to give the assessor those documents and an agreed inventory, identifying anything that will be removed or any evidence that remains unresolved. (Normattiva)

How much does a boat valuation cost in Italy?

This guide does not set valuation fees or turnaround times, because they depend on the boat and the assessor. Email us at info@europeanyachtbrokers.com for the latest information, and ask each assessor for a written quotation that states the scope of the report.
