How to Buy a Boat in Sicily, Italy in 2027: Checks and Costs

Check the boat, its documents, your berth and the Egadi access rules before completing a purchase.

By Peter Mattey · 9 min read · Facts checked 2026-10-03

Buying a boat Sicily starts with deciding how the boat will work for your plans in Italy. The boat itself, the ownership file, a suitable berth and your intended cruising area all deserve separate checks. This guide combines verified national registration rules with information published by the Egadi protected area's manager. The inspection and budgeting suggestions are recommendations; they do not claim that every seller, marina or authority follows an identical process.

The guide is for private buyers comparing boats in Sicily, including those viewing in Palermo or Catania and planning trips to the Egadi Islands. It explains what to ask before committing, where documentary checks belong and which local access arrangements should be considered when planning a first voyage. For anything this guide does not cover, email us at info@europeanyachtbrokers.com for the latest information.

Section 1

Choose a boat for the waters you plan to use

Start with your intended use, rather than a photograph of a boat at a sunny pontoon. Our recommendation is to write down where you want to keep the boat, where you expect to cruise and who will operate it. A viewing in Palermo or Catania does not establish that the boat suits your intended berth or cruising area. Ask the seller for the boat's recorded dimensions and draft, and take those details to the proposed marina before agreeing to purchase.

For a buyer planning to cruise the Egadi Islands, access rules deserve attention before the sea trial. The protected area's manager publishes a zoning map and distinguishes areas with different permissions. Our recommendation is to check the proposed trial route with the skipper and the reserve manager before leaving the berth. Do not treat a seller's previous itinerary as permission for your own voyage. Keep route planning separate from the purchase negotiation, so restrictions do not become a surprise after completion.

The reserve's published description permits several forms of propulsion in its general protection zone, while its description of the partial protection zone limits free anchoring to areas outside environmentally important seabeds. Those distinctions can change what a buyer can do with a particular boat. Our recommendation is to describe the intended propulsion and anchoring plans when asking the manager about access. This is a practical suitability check, rather than a statement that any type of boat is preferable throughout Sicily.

Broker tip: Our recommendation is to send the proposed marina the boat's dimensions and intended arrival date before travelling to view it; obtain its answer in writing and keep it with your purchase notes. See also our guide on how to buy a boat in Italy.

Section 2

Inspect the boat and establish what the paperwork proves

Our recommended inspection sequence starts with the seller's documents and then moves aboard. Match the identity in the documents to the boat you are viewing, and ask who has authority to sell it. The Italian registration requirements distinguish ownership evidence from technical evidence. That distinction is useful when checking a purchase file: a navigation document should not be treated as a complete answer to every question about ownership, equipment or earlier importation. Ask a locally qualified adviser to review unresolved differences.

For a boat that you intend to enter in the Italian central register, the Codice della nautica da diporto, Legislative Decree 171/2005, identifies the documents used for that application. The navigation service desk, Sportello telematico del diportista (STED), receives the application. Our recommendation is to show that desk the actual file before committing to a boat whose history crosses national borders. Explain the present registration and intended future registration, rather than asking for a checklist without describing the boat.

Our recommendation is to commission an independent inspection with an agreed written scope. Ask what the surveyor will inspect ashore, what requires an operational test and what cannot be inspected without dismantling. Agree permission for access with the seller and confirm arrangements with the yard. Keep a separate list of documents still missing and physical issues still unresolved. A clean deck, an attractive video and a successful engine start should not replace those enquiries or become promises about matters the inspection did not cover.

Broker tip: Our recommendation is to let the adviser see the original documents before you agree a completion date, and ask for a written list of anything the seller must supply. Readers often go on to our guide on whether you need a boat survey in Italy.

Section 3

Arrange berthing and budget before completion

Our recommendation is to obtain separate written quotations for the services you expect to use: the intended berth, survey attendance, lifting, storage, insurance and delivery. Describe the actual boat and the proposed dates. A seller's current arrangement should not be entered in your budget as an entitlement that transfers with the boat. Ask the operator directly about your own application and the scope of its offer. This guide does not supply a regional average because no verified comparable tariff dataset was obtained.

The Egadi reserve manager describes its recreational mooring fields as seasonal installations. A buyer planning to rely on those fields should ask which fields are operating for the intended visit and how an authorisation is obtained. Our recommendation is to prepare an alternative harbour plan as well. The published description of a field is evidence of the arrangement, rather than a live availability report. Do not treat a map symbol as confirmation that a buoy is free or suitable for your boat.

The manager offers different periods for mooring authorisations and explains where applications can be made. Our recommendation is to distinguish the permission to use a field from the marina contract used for keeping the boat elsewhere. Ask what the authorisation covers, and keep the payment record and permission together. Budgeting is easier when every quotation identifies its issuer, the service, any exclusions and the boat concerned. Only compare totals after checking that the competing offers cover the same period and services. Regional berth prices, survey fees, insurance premiums, delivery costs, processing times and Sicilian marina details are not covered here: email us at info@europeanyachtbrokers.com for the latest information.

Broker tip: Our recommendation is to keep the berth quotation separate from the boat offer and ask the operator to confirm acceptance of you and your boat before paying for a long stay. Our guide on whether you pay VAT on a boat in Italy covers a related point.

Section 4

Complete the sale without leaving the record unfinished

Our recommendation is to agree a completion checklist with the seller and your adviser before funds are released. It should identify the agreed boat, included equipment, documents, keys and physical handover arrangements. For craft subject to Italian registration, the transfer also requires action in the central electronic register of recreational craft, Archivio telematico centrale delle unità da diporto (ATCN). A signed purchase agreement and an updated public record serve different purposes. Ask who is responsible for submitting the transfer and retaining the filing receipt.

The publication of ownership changes is governed by the Codice della nautica da diporto, Legislative Decree 171/2005. Its timetable distinguishes an interested party resident abroad from another interested party. Our recommendation is to put the applicable filing date in the completion checklist and ask the desk to confirm the documents it needs. Do not confuse that filing deadline with a promised processing time. The deadline concerns the applicant's action; it does not establish how long a particular Sicilian office will take to complete its work.

Our recommendation is to plan the first voyage only after checking the documentation that will be carried aboard while the navigation licence is being updated. The current rule provides for a filing receipt and a further arrangement when prescribed construction and import documentation accompanies it. Ask the desk to explain which arrangement applies to your file. Retain copies for your records and the required documents for navigation. No verified regional processing average or universal permission for sailing immediately after any sale is claimed here.

Broker tip: Our recommendation is to nominate the person handling the transfer before completion and keep their written acknowledgement of the filing, together with the documents and evidence of handover. A related question is answered in our guide on how to register a boat in Italy.

Your questions

Frequently asked questions

Does buying a boat in Sicily guarantee a berth?

No berth entitlement is established by the official sources used here. Our recommendation is to obtain the operator's written acceptance and quotation for your own boat and dates. In the Egadi protected area, recreational buoy fields are described as seasonal installations, so a field shown on a map should not be treated as a live availability confirmation. (Area Marina Protetta Isole Egadi)

Can I use an engine anywhere in the Egadi reserve?

The manager's zoning description does not provide unrestricted access everywhere. It identifies different protection zones and describes free navigation by sail, oars, pedals or electric propulsion in zone B. Our recommendation is to check the intended route and propulsion with the manager before a trial or delivery voyage, rather than assuming the seller's earlier itinerary authorises yours. (Area Marina Protetta Isole Egadi)

What documents should I check for Italian registration?

The standard registration file includes ownership evidence, the EU declaration of conformity and installed-engine power declarations. Article 19 of the Codice della nautica da diporto provides alternatives and additional documents for specific boat histories. Our recommendation is to show the actual file to STED before committing, especially when the boat comes from another country or does not have CE marking. (Normattiva)

How do I obtain an Egadi mooring authorisation?

The manager describes applications through its offices and at the buoy fields through its dedicated application. It offers daily, weekly and monthly authorisations. Our recommendation is to ask which field operates for your visit and what the permission covers, then retain the authorisation with its payment record. Those arrangements do not establish the availability or cost of a separate marina berth. (Area Marina Protetta Isole Egadi)

What must happen after an Italian registered boat changes owner?

Relevant ownership deeds must be transcribed in ATCN and annotated on the navigation licence under Article 17 of the Codice della nautica da diporto. Our recommendation is to identify the person handling that filing in the completion checklist, check the applicable deadline and retain the STED receipt. A signed agreement should not be treated as confirmation that the public record has already been updated. (Normattiva)

What does it cost to keep a boat in Sicily?

This guide does not set berth prices, survey fees, insurance premiums or delivery costs, because they depend on the boat and the harbour. Email us at info@europeanyachtbrokers.com for the latest information, and ask each operator for a written quotation for your own boat and dates.
